Trails

Our goal is to create a backcountry "wilderness" mountain bike and nordic ski experience that the whole family can enjoy and contribute to building a healthy community. We currently have around 70 miles of trails open to mountain bikes with half of that being machine built single track trails. In the winter we groom 50 km of trails for nordic skiing (please, no fat biking in the winter).

Rockland Preserve is a hilly, rocky area with cliffs, ledges, and wooded areas. It is located in North Madison, south of the Madison/Durham border and west of Route 79. Rockland Preserve is home to Coan Pond, Rockland Bike Park and Natural Playground.

Village Park features several unusual rock formations, aka "pudding-stones" with names like Wildcat Rock and Lion Rock. Some can be ridden but are easier to hike. Hike or bike, they are well worth the climb for a decent view. The Village Park Trails are frequented by hikers, dog walkers, runners, and bikers alike. All trails are maintained throughout the year and are generally in excellent condition. An exception is during wet seasons where you may find some muddy areas, but the many bridges allow safe (and dry) passage over the worst. By looping trails within the park, you can crank out a decent 10 to 12 mile ride. There is some climbing involved but for the most part, a smooth fast ride. Be sure to visit the "Trail Elf" made features such as teeters, rock drops, log-overs, and bridges indicated on the map. Definitely ride Bridges, Two Guys, Rusty Car, Bull Bridge , Thing 2, and Superman (if you dare).

This compact trail network packs a punch with steep climbs, technical descents, and raw enduro-style terrain. Expect tight switchbacks, rock gardens, and loamy lines that change with the seasons. Perfect for intermediate to advanced riders looking for a challenge. Bonus: you can roll straight from The Wheel House to the trailhead.

The Bangor City Forest has something for everyone. If you want a casual gravel ride on nicely maintained double track or some gnarly New England classics - you'll find it here. Head to the Bangor Land Trust and Walden Parke Preserve for tech, the central trails between the East-West Loop will also provide. BCF connects with the Orono Land Trust for gravity and flow via the Veazie Railroad Bed. Head out, but be careful crossing Forest Ave. Want a guide? Slipping Gears Cycling hosts weekly group rides on Tuesday Evenings through the BCF/BLT/WPP trail systems. It is a great way to learn the trails with those that know them best. Check out their webpage for information. A loop is groomed in the Winter for fat bike riding. 

The northern side of the Notch features 'Earles' Trails' - Miles of smooth flowing single track - abounding in challenging climbs and swoopy descents. All envisioned and uncovered in the forest by the talented folks from Hampshire College. These trails are mostly not on State Forest land, but are incredibly fun.

The riding here can accommodate all abilities. Trails consist of dirt roads, double track, single track as well as numerous natural features for extra fun. This is what makes Bear Brook a great time. You can ride easy on Podunk road or push yourself to the limit on Catamount Hill. Class 1 and Class 2 eMTB use is permitted.

Bennett's Pond is part of the Connecticut State Park System. Together with Ridgefield's Hemlock Hills, Pine Mountain and Lake Windwing [Ridgefield Open Space Association (ROSA)] it forms one of the largest nature preserves in the Southwest portion of the state. Glacial activity has left numerous erratic boulders and small cliffs throughout the area. Featuring a wide variety of terrain it's a picturesque place and any ride here is bound to be memorable. The area consists of meadows, woodlands, wetlands and steep ridges all traversed by great trails of varying difficulty. The ride down to the pond is an easy and fast downhill but as you go north into Pine Mountain or further west into Hemlock Hills, the terrain can be challenging. Trails feature twisty tight single track along rock-strewn ridges; there's even a massive slick rock section. With some hike a bike in the northern reaches—Bennetts is still a diamond in the rough but an awesome park to explore.

Big River is a large tract (8600 acres) of land governed by Water Resources Board and located mainly in West Greenwich near exit 6, 6a & 7 along interstate 95 (south side of the highway from Amgen). It was acquired to build a reservoir many years ago but the project never really started. Currently the north side (not shown in the maps below) is being considered for a well field to add to the local water system. The south side of BR and Carr Pond area hold a labyrinth of trails mostly made over decades by the motorcycles and interwoven with old farmer and logging roads.

This land and its trails are owned by the Town of Falmouth and the Falmouth Land Trust. Please ride with gratitude on this protected land. Consisting of many expansive and diverse trails, Blackstrap Hill Preserve and Community Forest is popular among local riders. The trails have features that aggressive riders will enjoy: berms, flowy turns, drops and optional doubles. Riders can continue to some very loamy, flowy, and fun singletrack across the street at North Falmouth Community Forest. You can connect into Lowell Preserve from these trails. The trail network also continues under I-95 via the Cross Falmouth Trail to Hadlock Community Forest, where some flatter cross country trails can be found. Definitely a place to check out if you are into more aggressive all-mountain style riding, but also worth the trip for the cross country trails that are mixed in throughout.

With an extensive network of smooth pathways, a good mix of fast and flowy double and single track, as well as many more challenging tech trails up and down the several rocky hills in the park, Blue Hills Reservation is ideal for mountain bikers of all ages and abilities. The terrain ranges from woodlands to marshlands to rocky hills. There is an extensive, well-marked and well-maintained trail system with miles of fire roads, as well double and single track trails. Other activities available include hiking, swimming, canoeing and horseback riding. There is a designated swimming area at Houghton's Pond as well as a refreshment stand. 

Located in the heart of Augusta and within riding distance of the University of Maine at Augusta, the Bond Brook Recreation Area offers a well established network of singletrack and doubletrack/nordic trails. Bond Brook Recreation Area is built on a very hilly parcel of land. Beginner riders will be challenged by some of the climbs and features, but all riders can find plenty of trails to enjoy. Most challenging features have ride around options, or you can skip entire sections by using the double track.

This rolling forest is made up of 3,500 acres in the towns of Brimfield, Monsoon, and Wales. Multi use recreational property has over 20 miles of cart roads and many miles of mountain bike trails. There are no parking fees and the hours of operations are from sunrise to sunset.

Broken Ground Trails Access to the trails: Directions to Curtisville Rd Trail-Head Parking From I-393, take exit 2, East Side Dr. Turn right, then take the 3rd right onto South Curtisville Rd. Continue straight to the trailhead parking on the left side, just beyond the beaver pond. From East Concord village, just past the gas station, go up East Side Dr. (Rt 132), take the 2nd left onto Portsmouth St., then at the stop sign, a left onto South Curtisville Rd. Continue to the trail-head parking.

The 40 miles of marked MTB trail only represent a small percentage of the actual riding that is available in Burlington. With a sense of adventure and a little help from the locals you can ride for days on end without duplication. The Burlington trail network when combined with the nearby trail networks in Harwinton spans a handful of towns and two counties, one of the largest continuous MTB trail networks in Southern New England. The riding in Burlington is best described as varied. Trails exist for all riding abilities from first timers to the most skilled. There is a great balance between technicality and flow. Rocks, roots, rollers, berms etc., it’s one stop shopping for all your MTB needs. For Connecticut standards, there is also a good amount of elevation to be gained and lost. Technical climbs and flowy descents are strewn throughout the network, some over a mile in length so be prepared to pedal up and whoop it down.

Carolina Hills in Marshfield is a little known area well maintained with a growing trail system and alot of fun singletrack. The trails are fast, fun and flowy with some climbs and short sand sections.  Park at Eames Way School (when not in session) or Ferry St lot. From the school lot, the trailhead is across from the second driveway of the school circle. From the Ferry St lot the trails start 1/2 mile past gates on left. There is also ome fun singletrack track further up on left side off Bridle Trail. Trails extend across Route 3A Furnace Brook side. The system connects to Duxbury by way of the Bridle Trail and Red Gold Bogs Conservation area. Thanks to Marshfield’s RTC and SE NEMBA partnership. You can get a nice 35 mile ride doing the outer loop of both parks. 

Case Mountain is a popular trail network just southeast of Main Street in Manchester that was created by the Case Family “in the spirit of the romantic landscape ideal of the late Victoria era”. Highlights include the waterfall just north of the Spring St parking lot and the Lookout Mtn. overlook along the white trail, which is about a 20 minute walk from either of the main parking areas.

Clyde Pond is just phenomenal. Fast, flowy, some technical bits, but mostly just really fun. Very easy to get into a groove here, and just keep pedaling. Most of the trail networks are packed dirt with some cool features built in on the sides, and there are almost always ways to get around obstacles if you are not yet ready for them. I figure you can do about 90% of the riding here in about 10 miles, with very little repeated sections. GPS is super helpful, as there are tons of intersections. There are not really any climbs, or descents, and over that 10 miles, we only climbed about 800'. Just go here - you will love it.

This 1000 acre park is a gem Great for all levels of riding, with a 10 mile system of carriage roads laced with miles of single track, utility lines, and technical double tracks. Save your breath for a few tough climbs and check your brakes before bombing down hills. The park has a variety of scenery too, lakes, glacial features, forest and field habitats, old foundations, and mica mines. The artist Anna Huntington deeded her estate to Connecticut for the park, and two of her statues, one of bears and one of wolves guard the main parking lot. Huntington is a favorite of everyone from families to riders who enjoy highly technical trails.

Cowles Park in East Grandy offers well over 15 miles of easy to difficult trails. Many of these trails were created for and by mountain bikers but the park also attracts hikers, trail runners and dog walkers. The singletracks are amazing. They wind through the woods seemingly never going in a straight line for more than a few feet until you have to make a course adjustment. Mostly smooth, they do offer some technical challenges and a few short hills. Expect to return, you won't be able to explore all these trails in one ride. The only rule is - Don't Ride When The Trails Are Muddy.

Welcome to Drummer Hill, Keene’s most extensive singletrack destination You’ll find many hours of intermediate- through expert-level riding, consisting of mostly unsanitized, gnarly roots and rocks (and reggae!) in a base of sweet, tacky soil that knobbies will dig. In summertime the pristine waters of Goose Pond are a great place to stop and swim. On a fatbike in winter when the snow settles into a solid base, the singletrack becomes superfluous and you’ll discover the true meaning of “cross country” as the entire woods become a paved playground. The published maps of Keene show a roughly 4 square mile area called “Goose Pond Forest” which includes Goose Pond and the slopes and ridge that rise above to the east, Minister’s Lot, Drummer Hill, and adjacent regions of mixed private and public lands. With more than 18 miles of singletrack and 13 miles of unimproved doubletrack trails, it’s a local wilderness seeker’s dream. The trails are used year-round for mountain biking, hiking, running, fat biking, snowshoeing, and skiing, and some of the doubletrack includes the New England Interstate Snowmobile Corridor routes. The Drummer Hill area also connects to another, unmapped, singletrack system in the adjacent townships of Gilsum and Surry which can be accessed without riding on any paved roads.

The Duxbury Trail Network is one of the most undervalued trail networks in Eastern Massachusetts and hopefully this new map will help the riders from the immediate surrounding communities and further afield to enjoy these awesome trails. The Duxbury Trail Network has a wide variety of trails including a lot of fire road and single track, a lot of typical coastal forest tech, many punchy climbs and equally fun down hills, and very important, several fairly long, fast and flowy singletrack trails.

Earl's Trails in Hadley, Mass is well known for its large network of fast, flowy and buff trails. It is very close to Mount Holyoke Range Trail Network, which is just to the South of Earl's. Together these two ride areas can make for an epic day of riding.

WMNEMBA developed this trail network over 15 years ago. There are varying levels of hand built cross country trails with parking on the north end at Thompson Road and at the south end at Hemlock Drive. There's something for everyone--from old quarries to an abandoned settlement, to old stone milling machine, a polished pillar and some nice granite features--all with ride arounds.

The Presumpscot Regional Land Trust has 20 public access preserves and 3,000 acres of conserved lands with miles of public access trails and water access. We also coordinate the Sebago to the Sea Trail, a 28-mile trail from Standish to Portland.

Essex Woods is a small city park in Bangor that hosts a series of downhill mountain bike trails.  You won't find a lot of milage here, but the trails are some local favorites to get some elevation change and it is a great place to learn. Plans are in the works to rework these trails - look for updates! Essex Woods is also a local birding hotspot and has the city off leash dog park. 

Fox Park has several long, hand built looping switch backing trails. There are quite a few hills to climb. But then you get some truly awesome flowy downhills, as your reward. There are plenty of tight tight technical sections and lots of hand made berms on the tighter corners. 

Across the region north of Franconia Notch there exists a series of small, localized trail systems. Franconia’s Fox Hill Park, Easton's Cooley Jericho Community Forest, and Littleton’s Parker Mountain represent only a handful of the numerous trails spread throughout the valley. 

The Franklin Falls Dam federal flood control lands are located on both sides of the Pemigewasset River between Bristol and Franklin, NH. The property consists of more than 2,500 wooded acres and spans five towns. It is managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The mountain bike trail system is centered near the Franklin Falls Dam administrative offices on highway 127, three miles south of I-93 off exit 22. The system currently consists of approximately 10 miles of multi-use trail, built by mountain bikers for mountain bikers. Much of the terrain is very “un-New England like” with very few rocks. As a result Franklin Falls is known for its flowing, buff single track. It is great venue for group rides with mixed skill levels. Experts can enjoy high speed tree-slaloming, while novices can enjoy the trails at a more relaxed pace without getting in over their heads in difficulty level. The signature trail at Franklin Falls is Mighty Chicken. It is sure to put a smile on your face.  Mighty Chicken is a gravity trail, built in a natural half-pipe created by the walls of Chicken Ravine. The trail surfs up and down the ravine walls then finishes out over a series of drops and berms. It continues to be tuned to increase the yeehaw! Index. The trail system is open year round, and is a great choice for early spring riding when other trail systems are closed for mud season. Sandy sub-soil keeps the area extremely well drained so mud is virtually non-existent.
