Bridging a Gap On The South Shore
On Sunday 11/7/21 SE Mass and Cape Cod NEMBA built a 200’ bog bridge at the Great Neck Conservation Area in Wareham MA. The property is owned by Wildlands Trust. The two chapters had been talking with Wildlands about building a bridge over a perpetually muddy area for more than a year. But like so many things, Covid-19 threw a monkey wrench into the works.
This fall, Ethan Nardone, a prospective Eagle Scout candidate was looking for a project to complete before he reached his 18th birthday.
Things dovetailed from there. SE MASS and CC NEMBA donated the money necessary to purchase the building materials and the project was on.
Over 40 volunteers, from the two NEMBA chapters, Wildlands Trust staff, Ethan’s friends and family and the mountain bike club from the nearby Taybor Academy constructed the bridge. Amazingly in just under two hours.
Great Neck is a great place to ride, and if you look at Trailforks for Wareham you’ll see that it is an integral part of the town's trail system.
It should be noted that this is the first joint project of Wildlands Trust and NEMBA. WIldlands owns over 40 properties in SE MASS, many of which have extensive trail systems.
Look for more joint projects in the future.
