SEMass NEMBA Trail Days @ Hale Reservation in Westwood, MA

Dates: 10/15/2020 through 10/22/2020

Three new bridges are being constructed at Hale Reservation in Westwood MA on the Little Bridges trail near the ABC Cabins.  This trail, which is on most major mountain biking routes in the park, has two existing bridges in dire need of replacement and one wet area that needs a small bridge.  The new bridges will extend a longer and much more stable platform for mountain bikers and hikers.  Some mountain biking features such as rollers or skinnies may be integrated into the bridge designs as time and materials allow.

Bridge materials are being provided by Koopman Lumber in Sharon at a significant discount to SE Mass NEMBA.  Carvalho & Roth Orthodontics in Newton also supported this build with a $500 donation to cover some of the material costs.  Additionally, NEMBA contributed funds to this bridge project by awarding a portion of a Trail Grant to SE Mass NEMBA for these bridges.  Thank you to all our supporters.

The bridge materials will be pre-cut off-site between October 15 and Oct 18.  Starting Monday, October 19 at 9 AM, a small crew will meet at Hale to move the materials a short distance to the work site and assemble the bridges. Volunteers will be needed anywhere from 1 - 3 hours - it’s up to you.  Similar volunteer crews will additionally be needed Tuesday, Wednesday and possibly Thursday morning (as necessary).  Volunteers with alternative work schedules with morning availability during the work week are encouraged to volunteer.

Volunteers will be provided specific meeting instructions by contacting Tom McKenna at the email address below.  Sizes of the work parties must remain small, well within the NEMBA guidelines of less than 10 people.  We expect 3 - 5 volunteers per day to be sufficient.  Having your own hammers or cordless screwdrivers will be helpful.

The Covid-19 guidelines set forth by NEMBA can be found here:

In addition, I ask that if you feel ill the day of or have any symptoms, or have been in the presence of someone who has an active covid-19 infection in the last 14 days, please don’t come.

Oh! Sign NEMBA's Annual Trail Care Waiver ahead of time if you haven't already done so.

Contact Tom McKenna at the email below to volunteer or, as needed, on his cell at (617) 216-3701.
