About 40 muddied, aching and sweaty mountain bikers turned out Sunday for the debut of the Livermore Challenge, a race that will become an annual event over challenging old school backcountry terrain and more forgiving modern trails.

With a mix of gravel, singletrack and pavement, the course gave riders 25-mile Half Send and 40-mile Full Send options.

“It was pretty sweet to get off the beaten track and do something I wouldn’t have thought to do on my own,” said Derek Schwartz, 36, of Porter, Maine an enduro-style rider at the conclusion of the Half Send. “It was nice to have a little bit of guidance and aid stations to get me out into the woods to get off my feet and on the bike more.”
