No offense but those older XT brakes suck (assuming they are the same vintage as the ones I have). I had those on my bike for a season and a half. I'd get them working great for a ride or two, but was forever having issues with them. I finally moved them onto my wife's back up bike (that's the lowest bike in the garage hierarchy). The weird thing is that I had some great rides on them, then terrible rides and without any intervention another great ride.

Well, it's slightly reassuring that it's not just me. Everything I've heard from people is constant praise for the XTs.

The newer ones are supposed to be awesome, based on your description, I think these are the same vintage as the ones I have.

Doesn't seem like people do much for maintenance besides annual bleed? That the consensus?

In the worst case I do an annual bleed, for the most part I don't do anything other than change pads (and clean the calipers when I pull the pads).
