Default Major Taylor TT - anyone going?

Anyone from this board? I'm tentatively going to be there, may get smoked but it looks like a good (albeit painful) hillclimb.

Thinking of using a SS geared to 32x16 with slicks.

Brion O'Connor wrote a great piece on Major Taylor for Delta Sky Magazine. It's a very good and informative read:

    "Major Injustice"

    Worth a read.

bdee, if you can push 32x16 all the way to the top of George Street, you should turn in a very respectable time. E-mail me at LTolman@LTolman.org if you want me to send you the gear-ratio data we collected for this Worcester hill climb in 2002. You can draw your own conclusion from the chart and graph, but in general, the harder the gear you can push, the faster you'll get to the top. Top times in the 2002 race tend to be 45-55 gear inches, so your 32x16, which is 54 gear inches, would be right up there.

Also, the URL that you gave is for last year's results & photos. This year's lowdown, including online registration, is at

Also, Seven Hills Wheelmen has a "Steepest Hills of Worcester" practice ride Friday night. George Street will be the last big climb on the ride and will seem easy compared to some of the others!

Lynne, thanks for the info. I'm still not sure where I'll be on Sunday, either there or in Carlisle. As with every year I've been hitting the hills in Providence, notably College Hill and Jenckes St for repeats. Jenckes is a hair over 1/10th of a mile and someone told me at it's steepest it has a 21% grade. Whatever it is, it hurts, a lot :P Fastest I can get up it with knobbies is 38 sec. If I make it out that way I'll be the guy on the sparkly blue SS mtn bike in the RI NEMBA T shirt. A SS group ride in Carlisle might lure me away.
