    NEMBA Announces Winners at
2004 Boston Mountain Bike Video Awards Competition

Event Features Mountain Bike Celebrity Wade Simmons from Vancouver, Canada, Redbones Barbecue, and a Screening of the Top Local Amateur Mtb Films.

April 26, 2004 – Acton, MA – The New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA) today announced the winners of its annual amateur filmmaking event, the Boston Mountain Bike Video Awards. The winners were selected at the award ceremony presented by JRA Cycles of Medford, MA and Rocky Mountain Bicycles of Vancouver, BC on April 24th. The event featured special guest Wade Simmons, professional mountain biker from British Columbia; Redbones Barbecue; "mountain bike bingo" with prizes from the sponsors; highlights from last year's finalists; and a screening of the best local amateur cycling films of the year.

The house was packed, with 250 attendees, topping last year's attendance. In order to encourage attendees to join NEMBA, an anonymous donor matched all membership up to $1,000, and the event brought in 47 members and $8170 in proceeds. All proceeds will benefit the advocacy efforts of NEMBA.

    The winners are:

    Best Production
Jeff Udell, "Ride Like a Girl"

    Best Riding
Jim Ioannidis, "From Dawn Till Dusk"

    Most Entertaining
Ben Haulenbeek and Jade Jenny, "Ground Rush preview"

    People's Choice
Sean Sullivan, "Lord of the Chainrings"

The other finalists were Lucas Brunelle, Paul Girard, Tom Guilmette, Mark Halliday, Jon Kibler, and Justin Schroth. Films included a documentary-style "adventure" film, an excursion on the frozen Charles River through Boston, a production featuring talented local area female riders, and a take-off on a classic French film that originally featured a Ferrari. The winners split $500 in prizes from JRA Cycles.

"The variety of video styles made for a fun evening," said Krisztina Holly, the event's emcee. "Attendees ranging in age from 6 to 66 took part in this celebration of local New England riding culture, and the event has raised some much-needed funds for NEMBA."

The evening started with an interview with Wade Simmons, professional mountain biker and freeride pioneer, who had just recently been voted in a reader poll as one of the top three most popular mountain bikers in the world. Simmons regaled the audience with stories of his work and, when asked for tips on how to become a professional rider, he suggested, "You just need to keep riding, and get better and better. Everything I do is calculated. It's the young riders, who try to get noticed at all costs, that get hurt. You have to build up to it." He also debunked some myths, when he described the very rigorous procedures necessary to build trails in the North Shore of Vancouver. Simmons was available all evening to sign autographs and chat.

Congrats to the winners and all who submitted videos!

If you have mpeg, quicktime, etc. versions of your videos available on the web, could you post the links here?

    Thanks!

Good Time! Redbones was cool. Wade was cool. VIDEOS WERE GREAT! It was fun talking to everyone there. I can't believe how many empty beer bottles Evil and IfRider had on sitting their table! Two words- POWER DRINKERS! And while we are on the topic of alcohol,..Why was Jamie from Harpoon drinking a Budweiser??? Seems kind of odd to me. And not to mention that while mtbTom was out in the desert ringing his bell on the Bullit..I had a great time buying his wife drinks while reminiscing about our last balmy two wheel tango in Nam and stuffing our bellies with sushi after. It was great to see all my BustedSpoke peeps and get the latest low down from Sinister.

I have to say PK, Z, Pete, Rocky Mountain and everybody who helped put that event together did a Great Job and deserve a big hand for bringing everyone together for a super good time! Super Funkalicious! ok...now it’s time for Dr.Toddski’s two complaints #1.the game of drunken MTB Bingo needs some serious revision and was pretty much lame. And #2.We all know that Wade is a cute guy and all with that charming Canadian accent, and that he lives a glamorous lifestyle and he just conveniently happens to have an empty wallet while standing at the bar as he bats a puppy dog look at me. Give me a break Dude. His interview was tooo long! Get on with the Videos and show me some action! For Gods shake- stop swapping the micro phone with him!, Wade exit stage left! Just kidding, He’s cool though, ya gotta be to be a pro…I’m off track- Z the Wade interview was way too long, but the question/answer session was entertaining and you were a great MC!

My personal favorite video of the night, educational yet entertaining, Mount Major, I need a link that video…please I need to see that again! That dude hiking up the mountain with his “STIFF TAIL” bike. Ohh yes.. the crew from Maine will be submitting a sequel to “Mount Major” next year; we were very inspired by that film.

    Great Time!

    peace

Yep, good time for sure. I thought that some of the vids were only mildly amusing but who cares, it was about the social aspect for me. I got a chance to see a whole mess of folks that I hadn't seen in ages.

Hey, Wade pulled the same "moths fluttering from the open wallet at the bar" trick with me too! Guess the life of a big MTB/FR superstar isn't as "profitable" as it is "glamourous". Afterall, I didn't see Cheryl Crow hanging around him. Although, the flick he was in that they showed the clips from (Disorder 3) had Jenna J. in it. I wonder if he got to "meet" her? WOW! She's WAY better than Cheryl Crow anyday

It was good to get out and hang with folks who share the passion for biking. The videos were great too. Great job Z and everyone else who made it happen.

Power drinking?? Nah, wait 'til Pedros! Camp Evil will not run out of Harpoon.

i recall an interview on nsmb.com a year or two back and wade was only making like 20,000 CDN per year. he didn't push himself hard for sponsorships like schley et al, but still sounded happy to be able to live by riding a bike.

so maybe those moths were real.

anyway, too bad i was several thousand miles away from going to see #2, but i've seen a few of the vids since then and they were all good (esp sean's and jim's). anyone know where i can find jade jenny's on-line?

Haaa haaa... you're just jealous that he gets paid to ride a mountain bike all around the world!

(Although apparently not paid very much... eh? )
