So, I've been out here a little over a month and thought I would share some impressions of midwest mountain biking, as it is. I've ridden about a dozen times around the greater Detroit area so far. So far, so good. The terrain is great. Much better than I expected. The few hilly areas that do exist in the area seem to be devoted to Recreation Areas (state parks). The singletrack for the most part is illy, extremely fast, tight and twisty. The only beef I have is there is a major void of appreciable obstacles to be found on the trails. (They sort of remind me of the Kingdom Trails a bit). The result is smooth trails that are super fast, luge-like bonzai runs. For the most part it's cool, but it makes for a faster rides which cover much more ground. Group rides rarely stop out on the trails, instead they hammer and hammer until they get back to the parking lot. A 10 miler runs about an hour and 20 milers are a little more than two hours. This is taking some getting used to for me. Out here I would happily trade my technical skills for a strong set of lungs. Hopefully, those will come with time.
