I'll clarifying this point right off the bat: it's pronounced "Burly", not "bee- early". And if Santa rode a mountain bike, "Ho, ho, ho-ly sh!t" is how he'd announce this event.

Here's the scoop: We'll be meeting at the Batchelor street parking lot at 8 am on Sunday, September 19. You catch that? Lemme say it louder: 8 AM, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, BATCHELOR STREET PARKING LOT. We'll be finishing there, too, but who knows when that will be. Don't expect to be finished before 3 or 4 pm. There will be mid-ride replenishment stashed somewhere near the Notch Visitors center. But, as with all PVNEMBA epic rides, come prepared. And if you don't know what that means, these rides ain't for you.

The ride will start at B street at 8 AM, hit almost every trail there, break at the Notch for red wine and cigarettes, continue on to Earl's, and conclude by returning to the B street parking lot. I'm not releasing any details about the loop, except to say that we'll be finishing the ride on Rollercoaster and you'll have to climb Serpent God.

I'm honored that both Rossi and Liam think this will be the most difficult epic. This one is deceiving - at no point will you be further than 3 miles from your car. Ain't that crazy?! This seems so innocuous. Even in my head, this ride seems like it should be easier than it is. But it's not. It's going to be brutal. I've a handful of pre-determined rest stops, but the reality is that there are 40+ miles of trail to be covered before the sun sets or riders keel over dead. We're not going to be waiting at the end of every trail.

As a final note, we have no idea how popular this ride is going to be. But the B street parking lot is kind of small, and we want to save room for other riders. If it's not too much trouble for you and a friend to carpool to this epic, other riders will greatly appreciate it.

Questions? Ask 'em.
See ya on the 19th!

The Tour Of The Long Ridge Epic-Deerfield to Gill PVEpic #1

Here it is, the first official post regarding the first epic ride in the PV Nemba Epic ride series.

What: A Long Epic Group ride that will explore...

Here it is, the first official post regarding the first epic ride in the PV Nemba Epic ride series.

What: A Long Epic Group ride that will explore the great trails along the Ridge that stretches from South Deerfield to Gill along the Connecticut River

When: September 12th Sunday at 8:00am until-?

Where: We'll Meet and Park in the Bicycles Unlimited Parking Lot on High St in Greenfield. We'll then shuttle down to the beginning of the ride on Sugarloaf North on Hillside Ave in Deerfield. We'll finish the ride back at Bicycles Unlimited.

It's been two years since last time I ran this ride. This year will be a little different, we'll park up north and shuttle down to Sugarloaf North and ride the great trails on that hill (we WON'T be doing the difficult hike a bike connector between north and south sugarloaf like we've done in the past).

Basically, we'll be linking together the following local haunts: Sugarloaf North, Hillside Trails, Clapp's POnd/ Stairmaster Area, The Pocumtuck Ridge, The Deerfield Ridge and Erberlushea Trails, The Greenfield Ridge, Poet's Seat, Coke Plant and the Falls River Trails in Gill.

This is a pretty great ride, I'm always amazed at how well all these smaller areas link together and form a pretty impressive riding region

It's around 40 miles of riding (maybe more), there are a few fairly technically challenging stretches (on the Deerfield Ridge and Greenfield Ridge), but most of it is only mildly-rugged xc. There is a lot of climbing (and descending) probably more than the other two Epics. There are a few sections of pavement, and some double track stretches (that are still fun) and a ton of quality single track.

There will be at least one water-refueling stop with bananas, cliff bars, and that sort of thing, but you'll need to carry anything else you'll want to eat.

The pace will be moderate to moderately strong-the main focus, as always, will be to keep moving. I'll try to set a pace that keeps most of us together-but there's no way around the fact that this will be a long, fairly challenging ride. Expect 6-7 hours of ride time.

We'll host a BBQ back at the parking area when the ride is over.

Hope to see you there, on the 12th of September!

Any Questions? Send them my way!

Liam

Back by popular demand. :rad:

Now in it's third season, the three-part Pioneer Valley Epic Ride Series will take place in September and October this year. The epic rides will showcase some of longer routes and larger riding areas in the Valley. Each ride will cover roughly 30 to 45 miles. These rides are geared toward stronger riders who are able to maintain a good pace for longer distances. The pace is not "race-pace", but the group will be moving.

The series will kick off with the 'Backyard Epic-Tour of the Ridges' on September 12th at 9:00am on, and in the area of, the Deerfield Ridge. Liam will fill-in the details on this.

The second ride "The B'Early Epic" will take place on September 19th, lead by the Chaz-man with the very lofty goal of riding every trail in both the Batchelor St and Earl's trail systems. Chaz will fill-in here...

And the final installment will be "The Rossi Epic" on October 17th. Feared and Revered and in it's 29th annual running (ok, maybe 10 or so). It's sure to satisfy your rocky ridge line hanker'n. About 37 miles on the M&M. One way, one water stop, and no easy way out!

Anyone who completes all three Epics will get a commemorative Finishers something??? Maybe a T-shirt, belt buckle, Pilsner, Hat, Chaz autographed issue of Single Tracks... Suggestions welcome.

If you think you'd like to participate or need more info please contact me!
