I figured I'd post this news item that is on the Pioneer Valley site (http://pvnemba.thestaticnetwork.com).

On January 30th, the Pioneer Valley chapter of NEMBA made its presence known at a meeting regarding future trail usage in the Cadwell Memorial Forest in Pelham. George Willard (the chapter president), Rich LaBombard, and many other cyclists attended the meeting in which NEMBA offered to assist in future trail maintenance and construction.

Though NEMBA had a strong presence, groups advocating closing the trails to mountain bikers were in greater number. In an interview with the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Helen Johnson, a UMASS graduate student who is drafted the plan for the land usage, even discussed the publics dislike for mountain bikers: "Some mountain bikers use it, and there are some people who feel there shouldn't be any mountain bikes allowed."

If you ride in the Cadwell area, you may consider taking a survey regarding trail usage at www.umass.edu/forwild/Info/Cadwell.htm (http://www.umass.edu/forwild/Info/Cadwell.htm'). Additionally, if you want to take further action in keeping this 1,200 acre land open to cyclists, you may contact George Willard ('bigring3@juno.com') for more information.
