So it looks like I'm going to roll the dice and move up to Vermont. Somewhere in the Rutland/Manchester area.
I do need some way to support myself, so if anyone hears of a position for a young attorney who is waiting for the bar results, please let me know.
And if you ever need a friend to talk about things, I'm always here for you.

Vermont's loss is Connecticut's gain.
You may have to rethink that whole Vermont Dairy philosophy now.

BG,
I know a really pretty single woman who lives and works near Manchester. I used to work with her when I worked at Green Mountain College in Poultney. She's super cool, very smart......and attractive.
Let me know where you end up and perhaps there could be some way for me to make introductions.
When are you making this move? Perhaps we can get in one CT ride before you head to the Green Mountain State.
All the best to ya,
Mark

I hope to make this move in March. We definitely need to ride. How about this weekend. At Westwoods? (I will surely miss that little heaven on earth, but luckily it will only be 3 hours away from were I plan on living)
Big Game certainly enjoys the company of women. Any intro you could make would be very welcome. I will be up there from Feb 10-20 to housesit for my bro and sis-in-law in Clarendon (outside Rutland) to immerse myself even more with the bar prep, so perhaps a study break would be in order?
So it looks like it will have to ride this weekend before I move. Let's do it. And i would have to say, after last Sunday, I am feeling very inspired (perhaps overconfident) about trying some really really really crazy things.
Anyone else interested? While I've never been to Vietnam or the other great places in Mass. I can guarantee this, for anyone making the trip down to Westwoods, it would be well worth it (I promise to show you the best stuff). It is snow free and the ground should be frozen still. You'll love it. Come on, you bean-towners, it only two hours down from Boston.
And if you don't, I guess my guarantee doesn't mean much, as I am what is know in the business as "judgment proof."

Congratulations and Good Luck!
I went to the Equinox last year for our anniversary and the indeed it is a nice area. Did some day hikes that look also to be well suited for the bike but I'm sure you have already canvassed the area for riding spots.
Additionally, you will be near the Battenkill to try some of those tricks that Kelly Jack taught you.

Big Game,
This is the first posting in the Vermont section that has gotten more than a few responses.
Soooo,
I'd like to suggest/nominate Big Game for Vermont NEMBA chapter president. Judging by Vermont NEMBA participation in this forum I don't think there will be any objectors. Plus, with the spare time the Big Guy seems to have in abundance(when not studying for the Vermont Bar) he could really get some good done up there.

There are trails in Rutland (but I have never ridden them), and Addison County beckons forthwith. Give a hoot when you land someplace and we can figure out someplace to ride.

Hey gang, thanks for all of your replies.
I would have to say Vermont is pretty damn cold. It was -20 last night. I am not kidding. What the hell is the point in that?
The bar exam is quickly approaching. I think I may have to take a road trip to a warmer climate to recover from this way-beyond bitter cold. This is nucking futs.
I brought my Intense up here. Was that some unrealistic dreaming or what? I think the lube on my chain would freeze solid if I attmepted to ride around.
I really wouldn't mind it if global warming was a reality rather than an unsupported science-esque theory propagated (and unfortunately, accepted by many) in order to legitimize the hidden agenda of the reds (who now operate under the guise of the "greens.")
My car did start this morning so at least I am not stuck in this house in the woods. Maybe I'll just drive my car around for a few miles, just in case the reds are right after all: that by burning fossils fuels we can make this globe warmer. If we all do our part and drive just a little extra today, we will make this a better world tomorrow.

Nawr, Ronnie proved that it's cow farts that cause global warming...
And you haven't really experienced it until it's been -30 degrees F for two weeks (1979).
And it's supposed to be tropical Wednesday, over freezing!
For some hope on the horizon, the nadir of annual average temperature is the first few days in February, and we're past it.

This is certainly a strange land. While driving on Route 7 I saw a sign that advertised "deer feed." Deer feed? I was wondering if Vermonters kept them as pets or if there was some sort of domestication involved.
Yesterday, I was walking my bro's and sis-in-law's dog out in the woods here. She found a mound of said deer feed someone put out. As a young chocolat lab with a voracious apetite, she couldn't be happier. She probably ate 3 quarts of it before I found managed to pull her off.
My question is, what's is the deal with deer feed? Are hunters putting this out just to fatten up the deer? Isn't this a bad land-management practice (I always heard one shouldn't feed wild animals)? If so, why is it legal? Or I am just another ignorant flat-lander too entrenched in my big city ways of Wallingford, Connecticut, to open my mind to a different world?
Maybe I should do my best to fit in around here. The deer feed was on special and even an out-of-work attorney such as myself could afford to buy a bag or two.
On a very postitive front, Vermont does have some fairly sophisticated offerings that trump what's availabl in Connecticut. The Price Chopper in Rutland has a sushi bar. It's pretty good. I bought the $12 sushi last night. It probably would have been around $18 bucks at a sushi resturant.
Maybe I shouldn't have spent the $12 on the sushi, afterall, I am looking for work. But according to the locals here, the deer feed is mighty tasty, so maybe I'll get a bag for the deer and a bag for me.
You probably heard the good news too, Mr. Peters. A heat wave is a coming at the end of next week according to Vivian Brown et al, from the Weather Channel.
yes, Ms. Brown, my favorite Weather Channel personality, is pregnant again! I admit I'm somewhat selfish, but I must understand she'll need to be with her new born. I will miss during her maternity leave, nonetheless. Tish is ok, but seems just a little too Hollywood for my tastes, but I guess that is what sells the weather. I heard that temps are going to scorch into the 20's by Friday.
Well I got to go shake of this cabin-fever somehow. I think I'll try to find some maple soda. Hmm. It is actually pretty good. It's more of a maple seltzer. It is refreshing and not too sweet, and packs the essence of the great Vermont maple stands into each bottle.

WARNING! KIND OF GROSS STUFF! DON'T READ IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, NURSING, OR IF YOU ARE EVEN SLIGHTLY UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE WORD 'ENTRAILS!"
I took the dog for another walk this afternoon. This time on the Long Trail off of 103 in Clarenden.
What is going on in Vermont?
As we started on the trail head, there was a half-butchered deer just dumped right dab in the middle of the trail, frozen stiff (my apologies for the graphic picture, but I have to tell somebody this). Of course, the little chocolate lab with the voracious appetite couldn't be happier. She starts taking off chunks of meat and fur and starts eating it. Then she played a nice game of keep away from Big Game (that one seems to be very popular these days). She's running around with bits of legs then comes back for seconds. She grabs some yummy frozen entrails, I am unable to grab her as I am not very nimble in the foot and a half of snow even with snow shoes on. I tried chasing her, but that just worked her appetite up more. She kept on going back. I think she is going to have a lot of difficulties tomorrow, if you know what I mean.
Anyway, I'm wondering, is there anyplace in Vermont to go hiking where there isn't evidence of this charming "Cult of the Deer?" I'm really getting the impression that people are really into deer, perhaps more than it is healthy. (And don't think I'm against eating game either, we all know I had an enjoyable time at the Pawlett Game supper last fall --- don't miss it next year, but be sure to get there early, and BYOS (bring your own Schlitz).
And my follow-up question is this: If it is impossible to avoid the "Cult of the Deer," how does one join? I see no sense in being an outsider, and if my happiness is only a slight attitude adjustment away, when then I should just go with the flow and try to fit in.
Maybe I'll start tonight. My brother has some venison burger in his freezer (interesting story behind that venison burger --- my brother found it in the fridge of his old apartment in East Dorset, aparrently the old tenant left it behind (or it could have been left behind many tenants ago and all have been to scared to touch it, I suppose). For some strange reason, my brother grew attached to the venison burger, so he took it with him to his new place. For an even stranger reason I've always wondered how old that venison is. Would carbon dating work? Do you think if I contacted the "Cult of the Deer", they could help me locate low-cost carbon dating? Or do you think that are they so astute at venison vintages, that they can determine age simply by the sniff-touch-taste test? I really wouldn't mind sharing with them at all, especially if it would help me out politically.
I think I'm going a little more cabin-feverish now. I starting to get a strange feeling that this little cabin is being surrounded by a about a hundred or so deer. I can hear them walking about. I see their tracks, but I only catch a glimpse of them. They're talking about me. I know it. They're talking about how they are going to break into the house and take it over, forcing me to live the garage, until the time that they kick me out of the garage too. Then they're going to make me go down to the feed store and force me to rob it of all the deer feed and then serve it to them, which will only attract more deer. They will be my master. Then the cops are going to take me away for robbing the feed store of all of its deer feed. Then I'm going to prison. And it won't be one of those fancy Connecticut Country Club "Correctional Facilities," it will be a dank joint in the heart of deer country here in Vermont. And the deer are going to continue to torment me there. I don't know what they are going to do to me. But they have to stop. I can't take it anymore! These deer are everywhere!
I need to hotline to the cult. I got to get these deer out of my mind. Can anyone be my sponsor?
Any help would be appreciated.
Your pal,
Big Game

I don't know Big Game, after reading your last few posts, I really think you might want to think about moving back to CT. That cold Vermont air seems to be having a very strange effect on you. Or you have been reading too many Stephen King books at night, all alone in your cabin.

OK, Big Game, sit down.
The Religion of Vermont is Farming. Its equivalent of a censer is called a spreader.
The Cult of Bambi suffuses the state. It's legal to feed 'em, but not good for 'em. Folks claim to do it because they're kind. They are. Kind of fond of the deer being in a convenient place to shoot. You will find dismembered deer parts year round, and in the oddest places. You will often hear shots just after sunset. The person shooting is Mr. Jacker. He likes to drive around and illuminate fields with his headlights. The Cult increasingly is fond of deer stands. Those are not kiddie hideouts, those small dwellings composed of scrap wood in trees - they're arsenals fueled by beer.
The deer milling outside are not trying to assault you, they're seeking sanctuary.
Have you met the coy dogs yet?
You humble and obedient servant,
John Boy

So I took the bar. But I'm was greatly afflicted with cabin fever, my mind was scattered and I was suprised that Vermont included the Multistate Practical Examination. No one else was. My buddy in Barre swears he told me about it. So I might be taking it again when the weather is much more enjoyable this July. We'll see. Results will be up in 6-8 weeks.
Attorney or not I still look forward to some road riding and mountain biking in Vermont. Just need the cold to go away. And the deer to stop seeking sanctuary (anhk).
