i've decided that the bullit would be better that the heckler for my purposes. however i have learned of a new bike. the yeti as-x. (http://www.yeticycles.com/1_bikes/as_x.html). it looks similiar to the heckler so i thought it might have comprable amount of travle but it has a 6in sherman fork up front, so i'm assuming it has more. it also has a 5th element too. i have yet to find out how much travle the bike has. mtbr.com doesn't have anything either. anybody know anything about the riding charcteritics? it looks like the pivot point is a bit further back than the bullit.

P.S.
anybody know of any other good frames of similiar purpose in the same pricerange as the bullit?

Dude, I'd go with the bullit. I don't think the ASX with the sherman has been out long enough for anyone to rate it yet. But on the other hand, Yeti makes great products, but I don't think they sell it as a frame only option, do they? The bullit has been around a while and it is pretty much "bullit-proof" if you know what I mean. With the 5th element shock, it has received many good reviews. You really can't go wrong with a sc. As for the Yeti, I believe it has 7" travel in the back. Tough call, two really good manafacturers. Knuckle

there's a little blurp about the as-x in the mountain bike 2003 buyer's guide. it says it has up to 7in in the rear. the frame it available by itself. also in the same issue, there was a review about the sherman and they say it's even better then before.

The AS-X is available as a frame only and it is supposed to be a totally re-designe frame-set for 2003.....an improved frame-set.

Check out http://www.universalcycles.com and/or http://www.adrenalinebikes.com for pricing info etc.

I'm not sure if they are available yet, but maybe they are by now.

In addition, the guys up in Maine at Hilltop have a Yeti logo on their web site, so maybe they can hook you up with an AS-X as well.....they give discounts to NEMBA members as well.

They also do Santa Cruz....see Jolly Time's post about his winter project to see his sweet Trans Red Bullit.

Keep us posted on what you decide to get.

I'm looking at that yeti and it is definitely a sweet ass bike if your looking for a non bullit. I'm a sherman rider and I havn't had a problem with the fork yet. It's got about 30 hours on it or so. Knuckle

I'd bet the as-x is way overpriced and nowhere near the bullit pricerange. It looks to have adjustable travel, probably 5 to 7. I know last years model had 4, 5 or 6 inch modes. Its good to see the 5th element on there though.
I'd go bullit, not just because i have one, because its probably a better value.

I personally would shy away from YETI. I had one of the 1996 AS-LT's from the original YETI (just before Schwinn bought them). I loved the bike and raced it XC for 3 years. Then it broke, and YETI wouldn't warranty it because the current YETI wasn't the old YETI or the Schwinn YETI but the new YETI. Makes a lifetime warranty on a $2500 frame kinda worthless.

do a search in the MTBR DH forum, or Ridemonkey forum for Jm's posts about the as-x. he did a bunch of research on getting a freerider, and put a lot of useful info together on it.
