the 8 speed 90speed debate has got me to really thinking yeah i know it hurts. but if anyone is good with with math maybe this question can be answered. with a 22 32 44 front crankset and 11-32 rear cassette what are the realworld gears and how many are duplicated from top to bottom on the front gears? on the granny gear you are not supposed to use the bottom 4 on the rear on the big ring not the top 3 also is there any way to calculate a rear cassette that can use all three front gears? is this a job for the mathamagicians. i cant do it help mee

real world gears and the math does NOT matter

you have all the gears for one reason, to shift faster. for certain you don't end up using every last single gear, but they exist so the extreme small and extreme large can be there. the -junk- gears in between...hey, use them...or not. don't matter.

some gearing combos are redundant. you only need to stay out of the gears that cause the chain to flop around (derailleur cage not long enough) or tighten up. anything else goes. if you can get the chain in a gear selection on any ring and any cog, and you can pedal it with no chain falling off or sticking, use it. there are no rules

I can often be found in the big ring and big cog. some people would say YOU CAN'T DO THAT !! but hey it rides fine and the chain is not gonna break. so I pedal my merry ass like that sometimes.

I really only use 4 major gear ratios, but I use all my cogs and rings. it depends on how you feel. do whatever..... it matters not.

Let's just say that you can't use the 44 x 11 and 22 x 32 because of cross-chaining.

You have four duplicate combinations if ratio is calculated to two places, so you have 21 usable gear ratios.

From lowest gear to highest gear:

22 x 32 - bad mojo, cross-chained.
22 x 28
22 x 24
32 x 32
22 x 21
32 x 28
22 x 18
32 x 24
22 x 16 - duplicates 44 x 32.
44 x 32
32 x 21
22 x 14 - duplicates 44 x 28.
44 x 28
32 x 18
22 x 12 - duplicates 44 x 24.
44 x 24
22 x 11 - duplicates 32 x 16.
32 x 16
44 x 21
32 x 14
44 x 18
32 x 12
44 x 16
32 x 11
44 x 14
44 x 12
44 x 11 - bad mojo, cross-chained.

I think you have the cross chain Backwards it is the 44 X 32 and 22 X 11 are the cross chain

I mean What is the use if you can't use your largest chainring 44 in the smallest cog 11 to get max speed , or smallest chainring (22) with with largest cog ( 32 ) most torque for going up uphill.

first you got the cross chaining backward

and second

it DOESN'T MATTER with a GOOD SETUP

who said cross chain is a problem ? gee good thing to know I might now have to go back and undo those thosands of miles I have done in the extreme chain angle when I am in big/big...I must have done the /unpossible/

it allows me to stay put in the big ring and use up all my gears in the back, only dropping to the middle ring when I wimp out, or conditions warrant

cross chain is no problem with the new chains and XTR cogs and rings. they have solved that problem back in 1995.

Ya, I got it ass-backwards.

I can't comment on whether cross-chaining is no longer an issue, this is the first time I have heard the assertion. Besides, I'm either too cheap or can't afford XTR. Too much money for to little gain.

I with you on that one ! I still Run Mostly LX/STX

I will certainly admit that in big/big you do hear more noise, and it does cause more friction, and will cause more wear, but with enuf chain, it is ridable and I prefer it sometimes. though big/big is an intermediate gear and I don't stay in it too much anyhow...I usually pop in and then am ready for another ratio in a few hundred feet...and my real cruising gear is big/4th in back, which is the same gear as my singlespeed

anyhow, I rode 137 miles today. ask me how ;D
