That does look pretty cool. It'd be fun to put one together.

Yup, I'm considering doing it with my Raleigh.

Looks fun! but not very safe at a crowded weekend ski resort! I can just see it now, some kid loses control on a jump and launches that 50 pound monster 20 feet up in the air to have it land and kill someone. PLEASE tell me there is some sort of leash. It dosen't look like it would slide on it's side, which is good. Come on, there's no way to stop that thing!.... wait, I just watched the video that's cool..why the hell aren't those clowns wearing helmets!... so I paused the vid and I see a bmx bike with a Xkit on it?... "XBike" that's a really fricken gay name! ooooh.. Xbike the choice of a generation. How about "Freeskiingbiking" No that's what it's called, I'm confused I'm sticking with my good old friend the snowboard. That doesn't mean I won't try out your Xtoy Record!

I'm gonna sit here and play armchair know it all for a bit, I don't like the looks of the pedals. It would work better if you had the option of positioning your strong foot forward, a 12 inch long downhill pedal thing would be better.

Hey J, Powderhouse Hill ropetow (S.Berwick) is open Fri nite's 6-9 $5. I hear they have some pretty sick jumps and not to crowded, might go tonite!

speaking of X..TransworldSnowboarding on the Xbox is GREAT!

over and out, T

How's the tow rope on the snowboard? I think that chairlifts are a pain for snowboards, the rope must be an adventure. However $5 is a pretty sweet deal.

Ropetoes aren't too bad, you just gotta know when and how to bail, they are tricky.

So I'm exploring the Xbasterd bike site, and there appears to be a XC version. This is either the stupidest thing I've seen or it's sheer brilliance! Front ski packs down snow so you can pedal? Would this work, must try. Somebody buy one of these kits before all this snow melts!

Doesn't look like it would be that hard to make your own XC version , using an old/ski Snow board laying around, I might have just founs a weekend project :)

it is more complex than it looks because the skewer has a tortional spring system to keep the ski lined up for landings

January 10th, 2003, 11:18 PM
Where the ski attaches you could use a hindge from a double swinging door. Like the doors you see in resturants going into and out of the kitchen. They use a tortional spring system to keep the door in the closed position but under force move in both directions.

Yeah Right.

That ride requires tiny brain and big balls.

the only problems with it that I can see are turning and hills. I think it is for something more like cross country ski trails

That winter x bike looks interesting...Here's a prototype snowmobile type tread for rear of mtn bike, plus ski attachement for front.

BikrDude, I wish I could find this for sale, from what I could find, it was a prototype and not for sale. The bike frame is a German Custom make - www.votec.com , it's possible that the cat-track is available somewhere's in Europe, If you can translate those web-sites, you may find this item. I found a great HPV website, with links to all kinds of pedal powered things, including where I found this, see : http://webpages.charter.net/rcgilmore/Illustrations.htm. The picture I found was in [winter].

Also see this link - not very helpful though:

From what I can see, ski bikes, (also called ski-bobs), that have been seen popping up at American ski areas are actually old designs re-introduced. Apparently ski-bobs have been around in Europe in one form or another for over 50 years. Looks like currently over 40 ski areas in US are allowing these things, that they may be here to stay...Cool!

from the pictures it appears you have to pretty much dissamble the entire bike of all components ex fork and rear shock if f/s. this seems like a lot of work for something that will not be used very often. i looked at the web address they provide for areas open to their use it is very small in new england. it looks cool but seems like too much work for little use

If a bunch of folks had these you could go out to any local slope/hill and have at it. A little freeriding would be a hoot. I've got an old frame and fork that might just work. The skis would be easy to make also, just take some old DH skis and saw them off.

Maybe I'll give it a try ;)

I remember seeing lifties using ski bobs to get down the hill at Taos, NM about 10 years ago. They looked like custom jobs and they looked like a blast to ride. Check out the photo galleries on this web site. They have plenty of photos of ski bobs in use:
http://www.skibob.co.uk/

K2 made some snow bikes for downhill use last year. I remember seeing one in a shop up at Killington last year but I've never seen one on snow. It looks like they've officially taken down the page for these products but you can still see them if you go right to the product pages from their 2002 web site:

My opinion is if you like biking and you like sking or boarding and you got the funds then why the hell not. I tried a kid's own made version ski-bike (full sus 5in front and rear) up at Shawnee peak last year, it was awesome and real easy to control. It's actually more of a snowboarding feel. You steer by leaning and swinging the rear.

Someone earlier mentioned it would be to much work to convert back in forth. Come how difficult can it be? plus you you don't have take everything off, only the cranks and chain and your good to go! Yeah I agree the best way to go is to have a spare frame and fork.

The kit is only $129 w/out skis. You can pick used kid skis cheap.

I'm gonna purchase

Mt. Cranmore in N. Conway rents these FS models also. Looks like they could be a blast if you had a pack of people terrorizing on them.

A friend of mine built a front ski that he put on his bike, but the thing would just turn and slide. He couldn't take it off fast enough.
