View Full Version : RYE AIRFIELD

I hear rumors that there is talk about getting a bike only night at Rye Airfield in NH. I went last night for the first time and this place is FUN! I didn't ride because my fricking chain broke in the parking lot and I didn't bring in any tools, anyway it was very crowded with skateboarders. I had fun watching everybody ride. It was kind like watching a big aquarium full of spazy fish, and all of a sudden these big ass sharks would cruise by (the mountain bikes). This place would be super cool if there was a time slot for only bikes, so how can we make this happen?.. ..Well that's easy, get the word out and check this place out! Believe me I'm the last person on earth who wants to ride my mountainbike indoors, but with all this snow it makes perfect sense. Riding in there during the winter is like going to the gym for a good workout, not to mention keeping your biking skills sharp for the Spring. Anyway, this place is Rad! I can't wait to ride next Tuesday. I urge all of you the are young at heart and seeking something new, to go ride this place on Tuesday nights from 6-9pm, and push the powers to be, to get a bike only night... it ain't gonna happen if there isn't a big enough demand, SO GO and spend some dough!

Todd,
Just curious but what one of your many mountain bikes did you bring with you?
What would be the right kind of MTB for this place? Hardtail dirt jumper type?

Rye Airfield is a great place to ride, a bunch of us have been hitting it regularly on Thursday nights. There is usually a large group of MTB's on Thursday nights and for some reason, it's never too crowded (it must be that "must see TV thing"). It's one of the best places to hone your jumping skills and a good place to learn some new tricks as well...
As for what bike to ride, any hardtail will do...
This is my dedicated Rye bike:

Mark I brought my hardtail, kind of set up like the Sinister, but then again I didn't ride last night, so I kind of don't know what I'm talking about. My friends were riding Bullits, and were complaining about lack of "snap". I would think the more BMX like, the better.
BILL, Thursday nights too? Cool, I'll see you there sometime. Do you think this can become a reality to have some bike only hours? I certainly don't mind sharing with BMXers, but all the skateboards and rollerblades were a little distracting, just not enough room for us all, we take bigger lines.
Sweet bike! I've been thinking about getting one of those frames, you may have pushed me over the edge with that rig! :D

A bunch of us have been looking into renting out Rye after hours (like 9:00 to 11:00) on a Friday Night. It would be roughly $300.00, but we'd have the entire park (even the places we're not allowed to ride normally) and with enough people it wouldn't be that expensive.
I've also been doing the 9:00am to noon sessions on Saturdays and it's usually very dead. Last time we went there were only 6 guys on bikes and 3 of the 6 were us.

Thanks! If you ever want to take it for a spin at Rye or even in the woods, just let me know.

Bill,
I'm curious about the park layout. It's obviously geared to the skate / BMX crowd. Are bikes w/ 26" wheels and comparatively long wheelbases a bummer to ride there? (I noticed that you have the 24" wheels on your Rye specific bike) Also would it be a waste of time for riders that aren’t really advanced jumpers or freeriders?
Thanks,
AA

No, the jumps and ramps are not very tight, so longer wheelbase should be an issue. There are guys on DH bikes and my buddy rides 26's and they do just fine.

No at all, like I said it's a good oportunity to practice your jumping and hone some skills. I've notice a big difference in my riding since we started going there back in August.

anyone up for this sunday morning? i've heard the 9-12 slot is pretty quiet. i'd like to get up there and check it out.

Narlus -
I'm not a regular there but I've been to most of the sessions on the weekends. The 9 - 12 is usually pretty empty (esp. Saturdays).
Going solo isn't a bad gig either. You're bound to see a few others on big bikes.
Still nursing this slight tear in my meniscus (happened at RYE) so I got at least another week.
Maybe I just ride in the SNOW >:(

With the warm weather approaching, RYE is getting very uncrowned. 6-9pm sessions at night are very empty and Saturday morning is dead too. I have been going to some private MTB sessions late Thursday nights, but don't think I will be doing this anymore, because the crowds have really thinned out during normal hours. It is getting way too hot in there also. Let me know if any one wants to get in on the private mountainbike sessions, contact jd.wheelpower@verizon.net , first come first serve, riders are maxed out at 20, price fluctuates each week.

supposedly it's "old guy night" on thursdays, 6-9. of course, if the place is filled w/ old guys like sinister_bikes and his buddy dan, don't mistake "old guy" for "no talent" - they can rip!
i had a fun time saturday (aside from landing flat on my back once...ouchie) and hopefully can make it back on a semi-regular basis.

Wednesday nights are actually "old guy night", they take $2.00 off the door charge. But if you want to see some old guys ride, then it's Thursday night. ;D ;D
There are usually a lot MTB's at the 6-9 Thursday night sessions and lately it's been quiet at that time, so you'll have plenty of chances to do some runs...

Pretty much the entire park, with the exception of the cement pools and the beginer section, which are stricty for skaters.
