I play a lot of blues, and almost every kind of rock, and a little jazz. My band plays a mix of everything. We like to play weird styles of rock just because modern alternative rock is destroying all of the great things that have been done in the past 50 years. Technology is one thing to blame- it makes sounding good too easy. The other, is that less and less people are listening to the classics from the 60's to the mid 90's (skip the 80's ;D) and because of this, they can't see the quality difference of modern bands that actually had to play the whole thing through and make it sound goot to the modern bands who rely on protools and other audio editing tools to make their music sound good. One good example- listen to the chili peppers' new album and then pop in blood sugar sex magik. WOW I JUST GOT TOTALLY OFF TOPIC. but ya I play guitar and my band plays mostly originals.

WARNING CRITICAL POST WARNING
What about Phish? Usually Phish fans also like either the Grateful(ly) Dead or Jimmy Buffet, further proving their complete and utter misunderstanding as to what music really is. Yea, I know I am going to hit a nerve with you silly Parrot Heads out there. Between Buffett and the vastly overrated Springsteen, I am not sure who is ranked higher amongst the worst supposed musicians of all time. Probably Buffett.
I'm more of a metal guy, as long as it is good. Metallica used to be good before they decided they would rather make money than make good music. Tool and Korn and amongst the few really good bands of today. Both are great live.
And someone had the gall to mention Iron Maiden. Bad, bad... oh so bad. I am still convinced that the only reason anyone ever liked them in the first place was for their album cover art, because they were dreadful musicians.
Let me just repeat that Jimmy Buffett really sucks because it needs to be repeated often.

January 20th, 2003, 06:43 PM
I'm a Bass Guitarist, I've played in a few bands before. And got a descent amount of time in the recording studio. 80's influenced Metal, thats what I play in most the bands I played in. JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, to name some of my personal favorites. Without them, these bands that are metal today wouldnt be playing!.

Well I have and let me say this .Their dueling guiter work is some of the finest I have even heard. It is alsol a matter of taste, but to say they have no talent .You are just wrong..
I agree with you on Metallica. The older stuff had alot more bite(kill'em all) to it,but I like their newer stuff also. I think master of puppets is their best album. " One "though is in my opinion is thier best song.
Bacl Sabbath is right up there with the best . Old ac/dc (Bon Scott)
Oh ya Guns -n - Roses.. dead

Every time I hear Dickenson belch out "Run... to the hills....", that is exactly what I want to do. I really don't think Maiden influenced many bands of today. Judas Priest more so. They had a bit more talent. Queensryche comes to mind as a band influenced by both, but they suck now too, less lead guitarist Chris DeGarmo. Geoff Tate's recent solo release is pure kaka.
I really didn't start listening to metal until the late 80's anyway. Metallica's "And Justice..." and Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" pretty much won me over.
If you have Digital Cable or Satellite, check out the heavy metal music channel. It's the best way to find out about new music as well as hear some golden oldies.
Speaking of really bad bands, I never did get the whole Danzig thing. That guy's voice just grates me to no end. And he is a really bad guitar player.

iron maiden was a good band i liked them more when paul diano was the singer i am not very big on the extremely high pitched male singers dickinson has a good voice but i wish he would keep to the lower register. as a person he is very cool i spent a couple hours getting shitfaced with him. he was trying to explain the rules of crickett in between shots of yukon jack. judas priest just plain kicked ass, they had the perfect formula. im 42 and grew up in the zeppelin era they will always be my favorite band, but sabbath were the real pioneers of the driving distorted metal sound.listen to live recordings this is where its real anyone can sound great with studio effects.that is my personal test. but remember music is a very personal choice listen to who you love not everyone like the same thing so turn it up and blow it out

Metallica - Kill em' all
That was the album that made me pick up the guitar. I can play every song on that album. "As good or better than James Hetfield himself"
I've completely written them off anyway.
Iron Maiden is another fav.
New Bands
Tree - they are kick ass
Waaf - nothing on there interests me anymore
Wbcn - they don't know what they are
The new music does nothing for me, so I'm expanding my musical tastes to other areas. I play a lot of old tyme banjo now, and always searching for new exciting music. There isn't much nowadays. Of course I'm always listening for riffs and there is nothing that impresses me that Waaf plays. And if I hear any of the following songs once more on the radio, I'm gonna eat a niclel plated.
You shook me all night long.
Black Dog
Rock and Roll
Stairway to Heaven
Back in Black
Satisfaction
I don't hate Zep or AC/DC , they have 100's of awesome songs and they play the same **** over and over and over
I'd like to strangle the programming directors.
I saw some dude that has a couple of links to a couple of bands that sound pretty cool. seven nations - they got a freeking bag pipe player in the band (thats kick ass) and porcupinetree
Hey, here's something to do. Do up a nice fat boy and go to

As for Jimmy Buffett... eh. Grateful Dead... I came to the scene too late for them. Loooved "Touch of Grey" back in the day, and have a huge appreciation for "Shakedown Street", but I can't say I'm a Deadhead really.

I enjoy a myriad of music myself and don't really discriminate....depends on the mood. Everything from DMC, Beastie Boys, to The Who, Allmans, CSN, Jethro Tull, to Some Metal, and stuff like Cowboy Junkies, Jame Taylor, even some classical, and.....I'm a big fan of Johnny Cash. I saw him in Concert just before he got diagnosed with Parkinson's. If you like live stuff I recommend getting his Live a Folson Prison CD..."Hi, I'm Johnny Cash"...great stuff.

I saw Public Image Limited in Concert way back with the Sugarcubes (Bjork's first band) and that was a great show. PIL was awesome live.
Oh yeah, and I saw the Grateful Dead twice in concert too. Not a huge Dead fan, but I like their stuff and the concerts were one helluva fun time.

Agent,
I've been to tons of Bosstones shows and hung out with the band before and after shows and have been guest listed many times. At one show in Ithaca about 10 years ago I got wasted playing pinball in the bar with Dickey for 3 hours before the show. I was almost too drunk to move but Dickey was in his prime. I don't know how he does it. I have also ingested other toxins in the times I have spent hanging out with them. Definatly a party band.

January 22nd, 2003, 12:13 PM
When I was a boy I used to go to the Windham-Tolland 4-H camp in Pomfret, Conn. during the summer. There were a lot of fun times to be had. I made-out for the first time (yes, I subsequently got my heart broken). But anyway, during a slow, lazy hot day at camp, I wandered down to the basement of the lodge to the "library." The library was just a few shelves but had all of these really wacky books (I'd love to meet the cat who donated them). The first book that caught my eye, was a dictionary of american slang.
Oh the joy it brought me. This thing had every dirty word in the world. Many of which I never hear of. I brought it back to the cabin were I sharted it with the rest of the guys and we were hysterical.
Surprisingly, one of the entries was "music." We laughed at its absurdity and obsurity. It is apparently slang for "penis." I never heard of that before in my life. Who exactly referred to "music" as a penis? Where are they? When were they? I laughed trying to imagine what type of person would be casually say "music" in the same manner I would use "d***." Then I would think about whether some kid in the future would giggle over my use of the word "d***," instead of using his word, whatever that was. I found it amazing that words could be so funny.
I guess over the years I haven't grown up much from that 14-year old I used to be. As this post has been making me giggle every time someone adds a few words: This "music" is just getting bigger. (tee hee hee)
Your pal,
Big Game
