I got "The Mountain Bikers Training Bible" for Christmas and am finding it very overwhelming. Any tips to getting through it without a heart rate monitor or power guage thingy?

I too got the book for Christmas. If you've raced before and you knid of know what works you can skim through it, but stay towards the back with the Strength and Stretching section. If you're new to racing or being pretty hard core then read anything that you can't answer off the top of your head. But, still stay within the back section with the weights and stretching. As for the heart monitor: I don't like em, so I don't use em. Keep track of your speed and cadence more than your heart. I mean, when you race its all about the speed and guts. Unless you become an Olympic hopeful or you think you can unseat Roland Green then you can get into the technical heart rate things. Until then, just ride and take chances.
