How is your set your bike up for the winter?

I'd have a picture if my scanner worked or I had a digital camera.

I ride my specialized stumpy pro w/ 03 fox forx vanilla 125 RLC, shimano m545 pedals, a 2.1 maxxis mobster in the back, and a 2.1 Nokian gazzaloddi core in front. In other words I leave it how it was cause I am broke and can't change anything until I get enough $$ to buy some carbon risers and an Easton mag stem.

1) Put on the Nokian Extreme tires.
2) If there's enough snow on the ground to cause problems clipping in, dump the cleated shoes for Beans snow sneakers.
3) Ride.

Oh, yeah. If I had the budget / energy for fine tuning, I would replace the PD-M646 pedals with PD-M545s. The big cobby aluminum platform works better when riding without cleats - less likely to have a foot slip off if sole's wet/icy/muddy/wet leaves.

I've always wanted to ask someone how those softails handled. So....how do they handle? Also, shimano m545's are great but the platform doesn't give you as much grip as it looks because the grips are squared off and don't really dig into your shoe. Also, the mechanical internals stick up a little. If you don't want to ride clipless cause of ice and other "obstacles" I find it easier just to use a pedal wrench and put on some cheap platforms.

SloMo,

Why all the tape on the top tube?

Is that your only bike or just your winter ride?

Cheers,

I don't like changing pedals or bottom brackets unless absolutely necessary. Steel threading into aluminum and high torque is a marginal design at best. Yeah, I know, BBs are not high torque, but it's fine thread...

By experience, the 545 works better than the 646. The clip sticking up doesn't bug me, it goes away when you apply pressure.

Hi Guys,
Yes, Splat has seen me do some good crashes.
At least I try the obstacles buddy. ;)

Anyways...
Softtail:
It's a nice variation of the Hardtail. Mine has a 3" elastomer and it can be adjusted from 1 1/2 inch play to rock solid. It just takes the edge off the small bumps.

When I bought it KHS had a crappy rear shock, but after upgrading it this summer to their latest, I'm real happy with it.

Tape on Bar:
It's actually a roadie tube wrapped around. I first wrapped the chainstay to prevent chainslap, then did the crossbar as well. When I had straight bars, they would wack the crossbar occasionally.

This has been my only bike for past 2 years.
Cheers

I salute you for thuroughly using your bike.

I am on my third bike this year. There is long story why though. But I'll tell it anyway- early this year I purchased a 2002 raleigh m50 and I broke the BB jumping a month later. I brought it into the shop and they managed to further break it to the point where replacing every part on the bike didn't help. They managed to get me an 03 raleigh m50 for free which was great cause it was a little bit better than the 02. Then I started to get really really obsessed with mountain biking and around that time I joined NEMBA. Then I started biking 2 hours every day. 2 hours everyday is pretty hard on a low end mtb and as my skills progressed and I started getting into basic trials, I started breaking parts every day until the point where I was bringing my bike into the shop every week. Both the shop and I were not happy. I wasn't happy cause my bike kept on breaking and the shop wasn't happy cause they had to keep on fixing it for free. So one day I managed to snap the chain and when I brought it in they told me to get a better bike cause it was starting to get rediculous. So I saved up and got my new bike and it hasn't failed once, even on major crashes it still shifts right. I have knack to break any part made out of plastic aside from shifters and so far the only thing I have broken is the barrel adjuster on the rear D which seems amazing to me. So ya in my book any one who beats the **** out of a bike (well in rational cricumstances....throwing your bike off a 10 footer doesn't count) is cool.
