Seeing that it's winter. A road bike or mtb bike with slicks on a wind trainer or rollers is probably gonna be key. Unless you live near the coast or somewhere where it's not icy.
Most serious racers will restart their training schedule in January doing weight training primarily and spinning on rollers to develop their aerobic base.
Early season is primarily on the road--sometimes using fixed gear bikes and then focusing on a more strict training regimen. If you're really serious, get a road bike. Road bikes are awesome! But if you can't afford it, slicks will work.
Have fun!

Im also a junior racer. This season I started out with just my mtb and was finishing mid-pack. Then I got my road bike (Fuji Finest AL, smokin' deal $600) and started using that to train in late June. I decided to skip all the races in July and focus on the first race in August. I got 4th place in a rather competitive field (the course was also 19 miles long in 98 degree weather). It shows that it really does help. Even at Mt. Snow, at the top of the climb, i was in the top-10, but then my lack of DH skills (due to almost two months only road riding) dropped me back to 22nd. (dont ask, it was really pathetic, i basically skidded all the way down the mountain.)
