I used to run DH tubes, tires, standard rims. I call a standard rim a rim that's not UST Tubeless specific. I'm a clydesdale, and an occational 'Nam 4' drop etc is part of my avg ride, this tire combo kept me out of trouble - no pinch flats etc.
I'm now on 3rd month trying Stans notubes with standard rims, standard 2.2 tires, and having SOME success after finding the right pressure for my riding style. The verdict is still out, but I like the concept and better performance so far.

I found a sweet spot this summer while running DH presta tubes (the Panaracer Supertubes are great) in Continental Vertical Pro 2.3 tires. These work well for trail, heavy duty (Lynn/'Nam), and winter riding @ Harold Parker. They're a bit slow for XC racing, but do well for most other riding and never pinch flatted.
Lately I've been lugging around a set of fat Maxxis DH tires on my Uzzi @ Lynn Woods, 'Nam, and HP. They're definitely heavier but offer a lot more control & can handle lower pressures. Good in snow too (short of studs).
It'll be fun to hop back on my XC bike after pushing this sled around all winter:)
