I want to get some knee/shin guards to protect myself when I fall (and I do that often!). What do you guys and gals wear and recommend?

What's the best bang for the buck out there right now?

I've heard someone say that they got their armor at a motocross shop and saved some bucks......is the motocross stuff different than mtb armor or pretty much the same?

Me and my sore knees and shins thank you in advance!

You told me about your pads, but you said they slipped a bit and were hot in the summer.

This is one question that I haven't asked the forum about until today.

Thanks for bumping that thread for me though!

You rock MBC! :)

did I say that? cuz that doesn't sound like me.

you aren't going to get ones that aren't HOT in the summer. I said they weren't bad in the heat.

i use fox shin pads. i have the neoprene ones. i also have the light weight elbow ones. these work pretty well for a "soft pad" checkout foxracing.com for more info. a good place to buy them online would be danscomp.com. it's a bmx site but has a bunch of different pads. since you probably are going to primarily use them for mtb, you might want to consider a knee/shin combo pad, which fox makes as well. i have had no experience with these yet but i'm considering getting a pair (the neoprene shin pads over heat and are kinda overkill for just trail riding) good luck with ur search

I saw your post on the other thread and I stand corrected.

My apologies.....maybe I'm losing my memory from falling so much.

Cheers,

ROACH

Thanks for that short and definitive answer Todd.

I've heard multiple recommendations for Roach and will put it up high on the list.

Thanks.

I swear by Core Rat for knee/shin and Roach for arm. I have complete sets of both, but the Core Rate arm don't give the comfort or full coverage the Roach has, and the Roach DH leg armor is too hot & chafes. The cool thing about Core Rat is the great customer service you get-For example, the armor I've had for 2 years develops a velcro/strap issue. One email & 10$ later I have a newly-sewn on strap (after about 2 weeks round trip to Angie). Not bad!

Core Rat eh? I like the sound of that great customer service.

I'll have to look them up on the web.

Heres what i do,
Keep a 2x4 next to the bed. Pine is ok to start with but eventually you will need to get some oak or hickory. Around 3ft. long is good so you don't have to bend over and strain your back. Every night before you go to sleep give your shins 5 good whacks each with the wider side of the board and 3 each to the knees with the thin side. Don't worry the swelling will go down before you have to get up and after a week or so people get accustomed to your limping. Do this for 2 years and you will build up great resistance to injury do to impacts from falling of your bike. You wont need to worry about wearing bulky , hot , expensive pads to protect your fragile bones.
Of course your legs get kind of ugly and you may want to consider wearing jeans on all your rides so others don't ride off shrieking in horror

That's ingenious Bill!
I'm gonna try that one.

Does it work on the arms just as well?
Hmm, I'll try it on the head, then I can loose that dam helmet thingy. ;D
