Went on a nice off-road ride at Hale Woods in westwood today. First off-road ride in about a month!! Been WAY too long. Still waiting on my studded tires and Lake MXZ300's for some serious winter riding. Anyone else get out this weekend??

I got out on Saturday and Sunday.

Rode Saturday with Jolly Time from this forum. Thanks for the ride and for listening to all my shite JT!! You Da Man, Man.

Rode the West Hartford Resevoir with Snirch, Hardtail_Steve from this list and two other NEMBA members. It was snowy, muddy, and fun as hell, even though I fell a bunch, bent my derailler hanger and had virtually no braking power during the last 1/2 to quarter of the ride. Methinks Santa needs to bring me some Avid Mechanicals for Christmas.

Steve, you are hard core for driving 2 plus hours to ride man! Let's meet in the middle next time.

Snirch, thanks for being a kind and gracious host for my first ride in the Res. I hope I didn't slow you down to much. I'll keep riding and next time I'll do a better job of staying with the pack.

All in all these two rides have me more stoked than ever.

Cheers,

Mark

I went to Big River here in RI sunday. What a nice day to ride. I crashed twice going over some of the downed trees . My girl had to help me up after one crash i was stuck LOL We had a blast. Hope the whole winter stays in atleast the mid 40's beats the hell out of riding the rollers.

This sport has taken over my obsession with snowboarding. Lat winter i wanted it to be cold and snowy, this winter i wish it would stay warm so i can ride, ride, ride.

Guitarsark -- what are the winter regs in Hale? I used to ride into it from Noanet during the summer & fall. I think Noanet is done until May, so I'd love to know what's up with Hale.

I went for a nice ride in Yudicky NH on Sunday. The trails in the woods were pretty clear of snow, but on the edge of the woods where it was shaded, there was a lot of ice. Good balance practice! Where the sun hit the snow, it was mushy. It was like riding in wet concrete.
The most dangerous thing happened when I stopped to close off a trail short cut that was starting. I was looking for debris to use when I saw a small leaner that would work. So with out bothering to look up to see what else was up there, I started pushing on the leaner, and bonk! got hit square on the head by a small branch! :o Thank goodness I had kept my helmet on. Lesson learned!

Riding on Saturday was great! Nothing like riding on a rail trail with Mark and his Nail Trail! There was a decent amount of snow and it was more like riding in the sand. Add a little rain and it was just fine!

I am on the fence about selling my Superlight and buying a Heckler. At the end of the ride Mark looked at me and said very emphatically, "You should get a Heckler." Mark, you are a true friend and I thank you. Perhaps I will get a Heckler after all, but not until you let me buy you a beer!

JT,

You should buy a Hekler. That way all your riding buddies can try it out and see if it is a bike they would like. There needs to be a pioneer in every group.

I'm trying to get PK to sell his SL and get the Heckler so I can try it.

...........Oh was this thread about riding? Yesterday I hit the road for a few hours.

AA,
If your offering to buy my SL I will gladly pick up a heckler! Looks like the ultimate all purpose bike!

Sorry but I already have one, actually I'm pretty happy with mine. I've had it for 2+ years and IMO it's the best xc bike around.

Mark,
Remeber this is a NEW ENGLAND Mountain Biker Association, not Canadian. Them's fightin' words. Although, I will just let the standings speak for themselves...

JT,

We both know the playoffs are when the Ws and Ls really mean something. I think the Bs will show up this year in the playoffs. I'm just hoping that the Canadiens make it in with the way they are going so far this season....

Oh yeah......riding......I came to highly value my bell helmet yesterday while riding. Towards the end of our ride yesterday I had virtually no braking capabilities to speak of....I hit a short downhill with a right hand turn at the bottom.....Oh Shite!!! no Brakes!!! :o as I ram head first through about 10 fallen tree branches.....just put my head down and my helmet out front and bulled right through em....came out undamaged! Thank you Bell Helmets! ;D

Strangely, helmets are not made for more then one real hard hit. You may want to give that thing a serious inspection. It could have crack underneath the hard plastic cover. Might be time for a new one. Bell might even hook you up if it is a newer helmet.

Sorry MBC....it was kind of an impromptu ride......basically JT was nice enough to ride with me so I could blow off a little steam and rant about some crappy shite that is happenin right now.

We actually almost bagged the ride, but I think we are both glad that we didn't. I can't believe how many excellent riding spots are within such a short drive of my house. Although we only rode the rail trail, JT pointed out some sweet downhill sections of the real trails in Valley Falls.

I also discovered another great place to ride with my son Liam thanks to this Saturday ride.

Thanks again JT!

You know, I nominated Mark for Spam Whore of the year, but I am ready to nominate him for something else. Mr. Mark is by far the most appreciative person I have ever met! I have never been thanked so much for going out and riding my bike with someone. And to top it off, I have had a great time whenever I have ridden with Mark. So like the Bud commercial says - Here's to you Mr Appreciative Mountain Bike Rider!!!!

JT, you need to buy a Heckler so MBC can try it out. She may want one down the road, and your buying one just so she can try it out would be most appreciated. I'll even let you buy me a beer for it.

I've never heard of the band you are talking about but tell me more.

As for Marillion, well they haven't impressed me much with their latest offerings....but I'm keeping hope alive I guess.

I haven't got a clue what I'll be doing this spring.....let alone tomorrow.

I don't think I can pick up that station from here in CT, but I'll try....are you into the heavier side of Prog?

I guess we weren't the only ones at Big River on Sunday. I didn't see anyone else out all day but did see one bike going in when we were done. Felt good to be out in daylight. Saw about 3 hunters and one scared the crap out of me.

I have seen Big River/Carr's Pond wet before but never that wet.

Maybe I'll see some others on the trails next time.

Not yet Steve.

It was fun yesterday. You rocked on that Moab Dude!! Take good care of that bike since it's pretty much the last of the real Schwinns that were made right!?

We do have a higher cost of living here in CT, but our trails are better than yours back in the Capital Region don't ya think??

Hey Jollytime,
I was scrolling through this thread, and had to comment.
I sold my 01 Superlight Back in March, and ordered the Heckler with a 5th element. The Superlight was so much fun, but I was looking for a bike that could take some abuse, and still ride similar to and feel something like my Superlight geomtery etc (Not a pig). It took until October for it to arrive, and it was worth the wait, they shipped an '03...I can tell you, all the reviews are spot on, and this bike is tons of fun ;D, today's 3+" of snow didn't stop me from my Monday eve ride.
This is an out of date photo, b/c I've since swapped the stem out for a shorter stem, and added a quick release to the seatpost. I saw that Hecklers will now come standard with the quick release seatpost - I use it to lower the seat when I make a trip to Lynn or 'Nam. I ride an XL, so it looks BIG, I'm sure. Send me an email if you ride an XL and want to test it, since it's very hard to find a test model, let alone get one for yourself.
Bottom Line - You should get a Heckler ;)!
