Hi all, first time poster. Out of school and hoping to get more riding in these days, if real life doesn't get in the way. Anway, my question is whether or not anyone has any experience with the Avid Flak Jacket cables. I was considering the upgrade, since it's well past time to change my cables. Are they worth it over standard cables and housing? Or should I bite the bullet and go for the Gore stuff? Thanks!

Hi Nate,
I have tried both the Gore and the FlaK Jackets. If you plan on keeping the same bike go with the Gore. I Bought a shifter set years ago and it lasted 3 or 4 seasons. I put a set of flak jackets on my Santa Cruz when I bought it 2 years ago and got one season out of them. The difference is the Gore system is truly sealed and the Avids have a "jacket" that goes over the exposed part of the cable. If cost is an issue see if you can find a friend that is willing to split the set and use your half for the rear derailer where shifting performance is more important.

No experience with the Avid's. However, I'm well into my 3rd season with Gore Ride On's and they're still working well. This will be the 4th winter they've scene. Cost isn't too bad if you amoritize it over the life of the cable (assuming you don't sell your bike).
Tell someone who cares to get on PricePoint and get you a nice Holiday treat.
Good luck.

While we're talking about cables, has anyone tried Metawire from IRD ( http://www.interlocracing.com/ )?
It looks cool but I don't know anyone who's tried the stuff.

Heh, thanks for the replies. Gore cables will make a better gift from my relatives than most things they could think of. ;D

A friend of mine called the Avid "cheap imitations" of Gore cables.
But they are better than standard cables.
