Hi everyone,
I am in the market to buy a women's mountain bike (either new or used) that would be a good beginner bike but would allow me to grow into it as I get better.
Anyone have a bike for sale/know a good place to buy one in the Boston area? (I live in Watertown)
It's time to own my own bike...I'm sick of renting all the time!
thx,
gretchen

Gretchen,
What's your budget for your bike? Do you want to go full suspension or hard tail?

This may be more bike than what you are looking for as a beginner, but you didn't specify how you ride and this is a great deal...
My husband has a 16.5" 2002 Rocky Mountain Slayer that he's selling for only $1650 (retail around $2500). It has an incredible 5 inches of travel, but it's lightweight like a cross-country bike. It's in MINT condition it's spent most of the season in the box.
Perfect for a woman about my size (5'6") - but on a single income I can't justify this right now. :(
For more info on the bike (and some other larger bikes for sale), go to http://users.rcn.com/freshtracks/gear/rocky02.html or email Pete at noflyzone_allstars@yahoo.com. You can even come by during the day to test ride it. Best of luck finding your perfect ride!

Thanks MBC! Sounds like you've thrown your leg over a few Rocky Mountains eh? :)

MMc - I'm not so sure the 16.5" would be too small. I'm 5'-8" with a 30" inseam and my 16.5" fits really well. Darin Tinkham from Wheelsmith in Henniker, NH is about 5'-10" and also rides a 16.5".
Try one out to see.

Thanks Radair.............how do ride the Slayer? As a Freeride bike or as a Trailbike?

Actually I have an Instinct with (ssshhhh) Slayer linkage plates for longer travel. I have ridden a couple Slayers and they could be built up either way. Put on an extra set of burley wheels with fat tires - instant FR bike. I have this set-up with the Instinct and am quite happy with it for most riding.

I think stock the slayer comes as a trail bike. It's got 130mm in the front (FYI).
IAB was interested and was testing the 18.5." I guess it's still personal preference - but I can ride a 16.5" and I'm short :)
