Disc brakes

Do any of you own Hayes mech disc brakes? I was wonderign causs iam upgradign to dick brakes and wonderign if the hayes r any good?

For mechanical, I think Avids are recommended over Hayes.

I have Avids. Never tried the Hayes.

Seems that most reviewers rate the Avids as the best mechanicals.

A recent issue of Mountain Bike Magazine had an article featuring the latest developments and some short reviews of all the major name disc brake manufacturers.

The article might be helpful to you MTBSteve.

I will go so far as to say that the Avid are better than even the Hayes HYDROS. I've got both and I like the Avid better. The Hayes mech are lacking seriously in power.

You can, however, get them really cheap these days (I saw a complete set w/ levers for $95 new a while back). There is a reason though.

If you want to buy one set of brakes, get the Avid mech. If you don't mind buying a few sets, start with the Hayes or maybe some Magura and then upgrade when you realize they suck ;)

Unfortunately, that's what I did, though it was mainly before the Avid existed.

Another happy Avid user here. Totally easy set-up, no tool pad changes, great modulation and power.

Why go elsewhere?

Oh, and no hydraulic fluid!

Haven't tried the Hayes mechanical.
Rack up another vote for the Avid Mechanicals.
Love the ease of set-up. Avid is now offering 3 rotor sizes, 6 in/160mm (read XC), 7 in/185mm (read all conditions/"freeride") and 8 in/203mm (read downhill)
I currently run a 185mm/7inch rotor up front, and a 165mm/6+ inch (1st generation avid disc) in the back.
I found that the additional braking power up front really helps for my riding style.
