View Full Version : How Are Them Trails?

Anyone check out the trails in areas affected by last weeks storms? Penwood for instance is a mess and I've heard from CharlieB that the Res was affected also. In both there is evidence of minor clean up by good samaritans (thanks, I'm sure that everyone appreciates it). Not sure about other favorite haunts like Nepaug, Nashegan, Burr Pond, or others.

For Penwood (my local haunt), I already have a call into the park supervisor to get approval to stage a clean up session, hopefully next Friday morning (11/29) in lieu of the Turkey Burner ride that I traditionally stage (might tear off a ride afterwards anyhow). Could use your help, too.

At any rate, chime in with your observations and let the rest of us know. Better yet, take a favorite trail under your wing and clear it before the braiding starts. Remember though, any significant actions (i.e. reroutes, chainsawing, ramping, etc.) should be approved by the responsible property manager first. Light brush clearing should be no problem. Unsure? Ask the supervisor. Don't know who to call or how to proceed? Feel free to call on me (turch@cox.net or 860-653-5038) and I'll put you in touch with local NEMBA players, the property manager, or otherwise help in anyway that I can.

Regards,
Turch

Simple solution. Get off the keyboard and spin'em.

I have what some people call a "job", so it's not as simple as "getting off the keyboard to spin 'em." Work + two week vacation in Florida = no riding in three weeks.

We're approved to go into Penwood next Friday, 11/29, 8:00am. I estimate working until noon. Now I'm looking for help. My estimate is a need for three or four four person work details. Rakes and hand saws are the order of the day (Yes, there will be a couple of competent sawyers on hand. Please leave your chainsaws at home.).

Can I count on help from you?

I've been through Bluff Point, Miller's Pond, and Hartman's Park - just a few branches down - nothing significant down here.

There was a HUGE tree that fell across the trail at Bluff Point - almost immediatley there was a berm that was made. The DEP rep. has been notified...

Huckleberry was hit hard, but it has since rebounded with a couple exceptions thanks to the many hikers and bikers who frequent it. I rode Nepaug Tuesday night and it was suprisingly clear although evidence of downed trees was everywhere. Sunday rode the The Res. and found a many things 'out of place'. The good news is it's pretty clean again and there are a few new logstacles to ride.

Was gonna take a jaunt today see what i can do

Gilrbiker:

Most of its been cleared except for two rather large items. One of them is the better part of a tree on the yellow trail a few hundred yards north of the Northgate cul de sac and the other is a tree trunk laying across the red trail just south of the 'four bridges' area. No disrespect intended when I say both are buzz saw worthy items. Also, there is a little single track loop behind some Northington houses that is a mess. It was hard to even get in there. Each time out it get's a little better though.

Penwood - five people, five hours on a Friday morning, 4-6 inch snow pack, a couple of saws, and the west side trails are almost cleared. Ran the saws dry about 1/4 mile from Wintonbury road. Even managed to trudge down the snow so that with a little thaw/freeze action and you might even be able to ride this section. Beware straggling derailleur bities.

Might even be willing to give it another go if a few others are willing to kick in and tackle the remainder of the jeep road near Wintonbury and open up the east side trail leading back up the Lake Louise.

Drop a line if you can help.

The Res - word has it that a few regulars have been cleaning up the trails there. NDC has been advised of where the heavy stuff is so that they can bring out the saws. If you manage to get into the Res please pitch in when you come across branch debris.

Nepaug - Matty and Jenna report that they and others have been active clearing most of the storm debris out there. They also report that places like Burr Pond and Paugnut are recovering to decent shape.

I'm sure that trial users all appreciate these efforts.

West Woods: I rode yesterday. Trails are not too muddy, but mucho leaf cover. And there are so many sticks down, you could shake a stick at them.
