In all honesty, I've been looking at some of the Milford stuff on Vietnam as far as excerpts of town meetings and such. To me it does not seem like a reality that the purchase of Vietnam will actually happen. I'm not trying to be a dick here. Give me some reassurance here fellas. Knuckle

Last week, NEMBA reached 100% agreement on a Purchase and Sale Option to by 47 acres of Vietnam. We have a $15K certified check in hand to finalize the purchase, which should go through tomorrow!

How's this for real?!!!!!

We have raised about $90K towards the $200K purchase price and we will need to raise an additional $110K by Oct. 31, 2003.

To make this happen, we need ALL mountain bikers to donate to this cause. This will be the first time EVER that a MTB advocacy group has bought and owned open space.

You can read all about it in the upcoming issue of SingleTracks. Very exciting stuff!

Ahh Knucklepickle's keen intuition is working again ;D

On a serious note, if everyone that is a member of this forum donated $303 we would have $110,000. So how is this for a challenge I'm going to start by making my pledge today (PK the check is in the mail, honest). Only $109,697 to go.

Any one else?

For $303 I think I'd need an acre named after me or something. Maybe a nice sign - oh and a ribbon cutting ceremony!

Somebody call cnn!

Check out where the Margaret Liner Trust parcel is. It's the prime meat of 'Nam located to the left of the powerlines, with trails galore.

Maybe they can just rename the whole place "MtnBikerChk."

or maybe we can get Cannodale to donate a chunk of change and we can rename it:

"The Cannodale Forest formerly known as Vietnam."

As opposed to naming acres after people or companies there could be an "Honor Roll" of donors at the trail head.

This list should be alphabetical due to the fact that my name starts with "A" ;D

Then the northeast kingdom of vermont, then Maine!!!

PK should run against Teddy Kennedy in the next election then we could really protect some trails!

Philip - What are the white hatched parcels in the aerial photo? And who is David Fairbanks that owns a huge chunk just east of the Liner parcel?

This photo is a little scary, as it makes the Liner land look quite small relative to the big picture.

I'm pretty sure that something like that is planned. PK would know more. I think it would only be for the really big donors.

A couple of things to remember is that on that photo most of theland between the fairbanks land the hatchedoff land by rt 85 and the street on theother side is mostly Holliston Town Forest, hence it is already protected.

I herd roumors around town ( I live in Holliston) that the town of Holiston just bought the fairbanks parcel., but I have been unable to confirm this. I know in the spring the fairbanks parcel went up for sale 203 acres at $1.4 million. but the forsale sign jut disapeared after about 2 weeks. I know the town was interested, I just hope they did!

Philip can explain this better than I, but splat has the basic idea.

The properties to the North are mostly owned by the towns of Hollis and Milford. We have an agreement with the towns and the Commonwealth of MA that if we buy the Liner parcel, and the towns put conservation restrictions on their land, the State will pitch in to help buy most of the remaining large parcels that are not already owned by the towns.

The best trails are on the Liner parcel. And buying the Liner parcel is the key component to being at the table when trail access is discussed. We have a great relationship with the towns and the other stakeholders already.

Hopefully that helps clear some confusion - Philip please fix anything I said wrong! :)

Much of the land in the upper area of the map is Milford and Holliston Conservation land. Holliston is VERY close to purchasing Fairbanks. The other key parcel --besides the Liner property-- is Robshams. This parcel is in play right now for development and there is an environmental impact study on it presently.

For the big picture plan, check out:

A huge thanks goes out to AA!

True to his word (or was it Kazoo's?), we are $303 closer to buying land! You're awesome!

Anyone else up to AA's challenge?

Send to:

NEMBA's Land Preservation Fund
PO Box 2221
Acton MA 01720

Make the check out to "NEMBA" and write "Land Preservation Fund" in the memo section.

Thanks for keeping it real, AA!

In Todays Globe, in the west section, the was a little blurb about the town of Holliston , getting a $400,000 grant from the state to Help the Town and the trustees of the reservation purchase 210 Acre Plot that has been for sale. That sounds like the fairbanks Plot to me !
