Try riding inside at your local health club. The scenery will be much better. ;D

I usually leave work early 1 day a week this time of the year and sneak in a quick hour ride before it gets dark. haven't tried the night riding thing yet.

Am I the only one that thinks watching TV on the trainer is boring, even if you are watching your favorite show? I know it makes absolutely no sense, but I can be watching the Simpsons reruns on my trainer and want to shoot myself. The second I get off, I can settle down for a semi-entertaining TV session.

Sometimes you just have to ride outside no matter what!!! I don't like starting a ride in the rain, but will ride after a good storm( on trails the can handle the water ). Night riding is a blast and the lights are worth every penny for the fun you get. Most will last you around 4 years or more with plenty of use each season.
Don't worry about getting all the fancy stuff with the lights, just try a solid set without gizmos. Oh, I allmost forgot, just ride no matter what!

Night riding sounds really challenging and a lot of Fun!

Care to recommend a solid brand of lights to look into? I have two young boys and often the time to get a ride in is early morning or during the dark of night. Thanks!

TURBO CAT is a very solid system with no fancy crap. Just good solid alloy lights no coiled cords and good run time. Night rider and Vista light are used by some friends and they seem to bo good also.
Expect to pay around one hundred to a hundred fifty bucks for a bar light or a helmet light. I like one of each for faster riding, but one is fine for just cruising at night and you don't need to go with mega watt lights. 10 watt flood for the bar and 10 watt spot or med spot works well and gives good run time on smaller batteries.

Get outside and ride. If you can't ride, snowshoe. Inside trainers are the most boring and futile devices ever conceived - hot, noisy, and boring.
