For those of you who don't know what this is all about , notice Mr johnbryanpeters has listed as his location! he is calling me a Closet windows user! Jessh
I Will admnit I do use Windows! At home for games : At work because Muthaf%^%&% Exchange is what our email system to the desktop is on ( of course for the Main service it is on Unix :D ) and there isn't a way to read exchange mail on unix ( Yet, Ximian is getting really close with there connector product ) ! other than That Linux and Solaris Baby!
On windows if you have to change the Ip adress what Happeneds ? -- Reboot !
add a software Patch -- reboot !
Install a word processor -- reboot
try to have it do real work for more that a couple of days -- Memory Leak , BSOD
install Oracle about 6 reboots ! ( oracle is a Pig ! )
what is the first thing you do to a winblows machine when it has a problem -- Reboot !
My Main DNS server was Up for over a 800 days ! the only reason I had to reboot it , we had to physically move it ! I'm not saying unix is perfect , it's not , but it is a whole lot better than Microsloth.
On another note:
you said:
Microsoft systems, networks, and applications, mostly e-commerce. Currently I'm involved in monitoring and support of a geographically strung out set of server farms from Texas to Vermont. For the most part, it's all done from Vermont. Trails start from the far side of our parking lot, so I usually head out noonish.
what do you use to monitor you stuff ?

Ah an IT war is on I see. Well I have to agree with splat. Especially with Oracle. I have one site with Oracle 11.5.7 running dual tier on W2K. There are about 10 concurrent users. This machines have 3 P3 Xeon 900 I think processors and I think 4g of memmory and require a reboot about every two days. I have another site with 30 concurrent users on a solaris 220R server with 1g of memory and I never get any phone calls from that place. Oracle Is a ******* pig. Nt is a real ******* pig. NT + Oracle = NFG
Oracle + Unix = :)
Oh yeah, and one final note: IT SUCKS

FORACLE and FIT and most of all FNT. Do you know what I have to do to get oracle to work on NT?
A. Microsloth Visual Studio C+
B. Microsloth Visual Studio C+ SP4
C. Gnumake 3.79
D. MKS Toolkit 7.0
And installing that software is only half the battle. You got to **** with the **** to get it to build and relink executables. What a ******* horror show. That's Oracle for you. " Well we know it was designed for unix, but we'll figure out a way to hack it to work on NT "
Then you can install Oracle and hope you don't have any patches that require relinking or building of executebles and find out that one of the prerequisites for Oracle on NT got ****** up. I ******* hate NT. I can tell you horror story after horry story of sites that are too cheap to spend money on proper equipment to run Oracle. You want to play Oracle, you best get yourself a Sun or Hp box. Preferably Sun of course. Not a big fan of HP. I think Sun does things a little more logical than HP, just my opinion. And when your running java technology with Oracle, why not exclusively use Sun Servers with Solaris operating systems. They're the ones who write the development kits for java anyhow arent they? People are so ******* cheap and dumb and they always pay, especially when they have to see me, and with NT, they get real sick of me real quick. Not only do they go with Oracle on NT, but they defy the #1 law of Oracle and NT which is - DO NOT RUN YOUR PRODUCTION AND TEST ENVIRONMENTS ON THE SAME NT BOX. But what do they do? Ah-Um-Oh-Ah we really don't have the money for another server so test and prod will have to go on the same NT box. A week later I'm called in running a recover database command on the box becuase their DBA had exclusively set the test environment and shutdown and restarted the TEST database, but some how the TEST and PROD databases got crossmounted. I can sum up the explanation in two letters. NT. But they always insist on running TEST and PROD on the same lackluster NT box. FORACLE. The worst part of this story is that the company I'm working for now is running Oracle on NT. Yep, I got my 40% pay cut, but at least I got a ******* job. I'ts not $200 per hour consulting, but it's permanent, benefits, secure, and 10 minutes from my crib. I know I diss IT constantly, but it's nice to know that I don't have to do landscaping anymore for 10 bucks and hour and it's nice to have all the information of a company at your fingertips, ya know like entire employee salary spreadsheets, executives emails, HR hiring and firing letters. I like to stay one step ahead. At my last company, I would temporarily move this CFO's files from one nfs mount to another. He'd call up freaking out and our IT boy would go down there and then I'd put the files back back and the CFO would go " Oh, I guess I must have done something, well the files are there so thats good"
10 minutes later, I'd move the files again and he'd call up yelling again. I miss that fun netadmin stuff. I'm sick of Oracle. Peace out Splat and the rest of you lazy ******* IT bastards

My only beef with Windows is that I could have been MCSE by now if they hadn't changed over to W2K. I love W2K but that damn Active Directory is confusing and I don't have a large enough environment to apply any of the crap. But yes, from my experience, Oracle on NT does suck big ones!! Unix is a far more stable environment when it comes to Databases. Seeing that there is a Database war with Oracle and MS SQL I can see why it doesn't work well. I mean really, if you were in a product war with someone, would you want your product being run on their system?? Hell no!! So you make it work crappy, then the customer is forced to change over to a different system, taking that business away from your competitor.
Please don't start a MS SQL vs Oracle war out of this. My experience with databases doesn't really go past Access or MS SQL. I did do a paper in College that proved Oracle to be far better than MS SQL.

My apologies, I am late for the war, had to be reminded in http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=467511#post467511, which contains the short answer to Splat's q on monitoring.
I can't understand why anyone would pay Oracle licensing fees, much less put up with the problems described here.
Certs - I had MCSE and MCSD for a few years, but let it lapse. It forces you into a thorough review, but it's scammy and everyone depends on cheats. I got the manuals and read them about three times...
We really ought to stop boring the other bicyclists to tears...
But then, I started this, didn't I?
How about a solid depleted uranium operating system?

Bill Gates should be shot. Then we need to burn his body. Then spraypaint "TUX 3:16" all over the ashes. Mircosoft = Big Brother. They make SOFTWARE, not police the digital world. I swear to god they made a deal with the government that in order to not be broken up, they would monitor everyone and report fellons to the police.

Kevin, none of the type As that run corporations are human, and corporate ethics is an oxymoron. uSoft will fall in its time. In the meantime, they provide the most bang for the buck, the best documentation and support for the least cost to both business and home users. They would happily take your firstborn daughter in return, as would any other company.
If you want to play with botique or cryptically arcane or untouchably expensive systems and software, be my guest. I like to provide my customers with reasonably priced systems that satisfy their business needs, and the evil empire provides the tools to do that.

That used to be the true , but it is slowly changing as microsoft is putting the squeeze on corporations with there new licensing agreements. and yes Microsoft will eventually fall. and it will be under the weight of there own beurocracy and Greed.
You also brought up another point the Microsoft cert's I can't tell you how many people I have Interviewed , who got there cert but never ran a real enviroment. and I have taken some of those classes ( Yes I really have ! ) and what annoyed me most was they were taught to the Tests for Cert . not to learn how to do things, (which is the reason I was there, I had to use it ! , never plan on getting a MCSE) , and that really annoyed me, especially when I asked the instructor a couple of real world questions, and his first reply was "don't worry, that won't be on the test" and never really answeared the question!
and then I came across this last night on ebay , Microsoft cycling jersey's! ARG ! May god have mercy on our souls !

How much does Lou Gerstner, Carly Fioriana, Scott McNealy, Larry Ellison, Craig Barret, Steve Jobs donate to charity? Compare that to how much they pay themselves (except Jobs who paid himself a $1).
Gates gives and creates a culture that does so. Don't lose sight of that.

Cycling jerseys as a class make me want to barf in my boot - after seeing that one, I am going to proceed to do so.
On certification classes, and not just uDog, there are good and bad instructors. The nature of the examinations, especially the marketing-oriented bias (the "Microsoft answer") tend to cause the bad ones to proliferate. Never take a course unless a) a company is paying for it and b) you have seen the resume of the instructor.
