Rider........
Put a bad rider on a great bike and you still have a bad rider

Rider. I don't think too many people will argue that.
A good rider can still have a good ride on a bad bike. A bad rider will still be a bad rider, regardless of what bike he/she rides.

I agree, rider. However, would Roland Green have one NORBA on a $179.00 Huffy Walmart special? There has to be some level of assumed "quality" for this equation. Assuming a $600 intro mtb is the standard, rider rules without a doubt.
Just like many sports, your ability can improve with better equipment. But, a great rider on a mediocre ride will woop a mediocre rider on a great ride any day of the week.

THought I have to say rider, the bike can help a lot to make the rider better. If you are particulary bad in a certain aspect of cycling, you can purchase a bike that will make it easier (trouble downhilling? Get a fully). Basically, I'll give the bike some credit, but still mainly the rider.

Definitely the rider! I just rode Soapstone for the first time last Saturday and I have multiple bruises to show for it. In addition, my hardtail's frame had as many if not more dings to show for one helluva fun day of riding.
I definitely need to work and improve to really get the full enjoyment out of riding a place like Soapstone. But I was greatful that I wasn't riding a Superlight or Locomoto or something like that since I would have done some serious damage to a sweet rig and that wouldnt' have been a good thing.
So my vote goes to the rider, especially after watching one of the guys in my group kick my ass and bomb all over Soapstone on a Fisher Kaitai!

So if I suck on a hardtail...a $2000 FS won't fix me huh?
Dam, guess I'll just stick with my beater then.

I was trying to be the bike last Saturday, but for some reason my Nail Trail just didn't want to have anything to do with that and kept tossing me off! :o
I'm sure with more rides over time I will become one with the Nail Trail. Or switch to a Full Suspension rig before that actually happens! ;)
Perhaps you can provide me with some tips on how to "be the bike" if we get a chance to ride together again Justbill!

the ride is clearly of much more importance.
that's why when i'm in the middle of one of my many super-ballistic-endos i try and and think of ways i can shield my precious shinny bike from making hard and destructive contact with the nasty ground!
;D
