View Full Version : Solid Wood

Big Game
October 31st, 2002, 10:53 AM
Due to the success of the Solid Gold bike, my crew is looking for a new challenge. We are going to build a solid wood bike.

We do need your input on the type of wood to use. I was originally thinking of using honduras mahogany exclusively(to do my part to destroy the world's rain forests). But now I'm thinking it wood (ha ha ha) be better to use lumber native to New England, the home of NEMBA.

I think the frame wood (ha ha ha again) have to be hickory. For the seat, how about some soft Spruce from Maine?

The chain and chain rings will be a problem. We'll need the hardest wood for that. I believe ash is the hardest. Is this correct?

Please advise.

Bamboo and it's been done. Has also been done likely w/ ash or the like.

I'd like a solid crab-rangoon and spring-roll bike. Man I'm hungry!

It has Been Done ! Bamboo.

also if you get some antique bikes there wheels ( and other parts ) were made of wood. They used Oak and maple

Oh the hurt!

Admittedly, this topic may be a little trite. And I hope my response isn't just as painstakingly overbearing.

However, a solid wood "safety" bike has never been built.

There have been solid wood "bikes" built before, but those lacked any kind of pedal drive train.

There have been wood rims built before, but other parts, such as hubs and bearings were made out of iron.

There have been wood frames built before, but again, the bike's components were manufacturered from wood.

Couch and Splat ---

I don't get your negativity. While I have come to expect it from many some insignificant louts on these posts, you guys usually have something insightful to say. Are you guys having a bad day?

If you're hurting, so am I.

Talk to me. I'm always listening. Together we can get through this. Together we can do anything.

Big game ,

Was not out to be negitive or insult you , was just pointing out that it had been done. I rather enjoy your post , including this one ! If I offened you , I'm sorry it was not my intent.

I think we need to come up with some thing really wierd , like a 3 speed unicycle. you know use a sturmey archer 3 speed interanl hub and put it on a unicycle.

Big Game

You know splat, I was too busy typing when I should have been listening. That's why God gave me two ears and only two er... hands (I screwed that up somehow, but I know you get the point)

I love your idea. I think I have a three speed hub hanging around. But isn't the presence of a freewheel kind of a problem? Or is that it...we'll have to get a three speed hub sans freewheel? Me likey very much.

Sturmey-Archer Rocks!

splat
October 31st, 2002, 02:01 PM
That is why I said sturmey archer, it is an internal 3 speed, no freewheel to worry about.

Big Game
October 31st, 2002, 02:02 PM
Ahh.

Is that why some bikes have the freewheel in the Bottom bracket?

gungywump
October 31st, 2002, 02:47 PM
So basically you guys are building a uni-directional-uni-cycle?
It will never work. You need the direct drive nature of a unicycle to maintain balance. It HAS to go both forwards and backwards. Nice try though.

splat
October 31st, 2002, 03:14 PM
Hmmmm

That is true. I guess that is why you don't see coaster brakes on them either.

Big Game
October 31st, 2002, 03:40 PM
Yes, but you could put a rim brake on and do a little trials hippity hop instead. Granted it will more difficult and we'll need someone really talented for the job.

I nominate you splat.

His name is Chris Holm. He already does professional trials on a unicycle.
Here's the rules to the sport:

Keep Trying!

Since this is just an excuse to collect stars, I'll indulge in this insanity. First off, what happens to wood when it gets wet, it expands, this will cause every part on your wooden fantasy to seize up. Oh you say you won't ride it though water, then in that case your wood bike will catch on fire from all the friction. It just won't work. Buy a Cdale woody and a limited edition wood Sram derailleur, faux finish the rest. Of course this will not satisfy Big G's lust for the "real thing", but at least you can ride the damn thing!

Todd,

The Big game did make a sweet table lamp out of a broken Jekyl frame. You may just want to file this idea away for future use!

Some wood will not swell.

That's why they invented viagra.

Thank you. Thank you very much. I'll be playing until Thursday nite. Be sure to try the veal.

Great, so he likes building things with inappropriate materials, that's called an ARTIST. Big Game is like a retarded Leonardo Devinchi.

More like he can build something out a useless pile of metal(nothing) or in this case a Jekyll frame. ;D But, I do agree with the retarded part.

Right on Dawgee!!! AS far as this topic, Big Game is just insane!! It has been proven time and time again!! I really think he is trying to crash the forum server by over posting. He is really a NEMBA IT tester!! They can't use their own people becaue (speaking as an IT professional myself) we are too intelligent and know the system therefore it is impossible for us to consciously crash it. But they have discoverred this overfilled windbag called Big Game and rather than delete his account they continue to let him post is idiotic subject matter. Yes it is entertaining. But he is being used. He is a NEMBA mothership patsy!!!! So let him write is banter and pay no attention to the talk about wooden bikes. Next he will want to build a bike of cheese!!! Or maybe even olive loaf!!!

Later!!

I feel the need to slightly defend Big Game. Even if you think this topic is banal, he at least never posts pure-spam. There is a ton of spam on this board and he at least attempts to say worthwhile things. Whether what he says is worthwhile to you or not, that's not his fault. Don't blame him for at least attempting to make the board active.

I agree!! Must defend Big Game here. He may Come up with Crazy subject and Ideas , and even stir the Pot quite a bit ! ( i want to know how many Bikes he winds up cleaning on sunday ! ) But he does it all in the name of fun! And if there is anything wrong with fun ! let me out now !

hmmm How about a frontwheel drive bike ( not 2 wheel drive, I know that has been done, even though not well )

I say we built a bike out of Big Games Skeleton. A bike made of bones. It seems like a waste to lose his charm and wit so we can harvest his brain and use it as some sort of super cycle computer. Think of all the neat stuff we could make out of his skin, tires, seat, grips.

What's up Big G, want to donate your body for the bone bike?

???What's with all those handicap bike photos, huh????

I never said it was a negative thing that he posts such weird topics. I mean, I do think he is insane. I am just saying there is a conspiracy and those responsible are merely taking advantage of this poor individual. Some have said that the real big game is no longer around and this big game is an imposter. some poor internet junky who sits at home all day and posts to this forum. 10 yrs ago the real big game challenged some folks to a hill climb and as he was coming to the top of the hill he forgot to check to see where the hill actually ended. Well, no one knows what happen that day. They saw him reaching the summit of the climb and next thing they know he just vanished. No body, no blood, bo bike. Everything just gone! In fact the anniversary is this Sunday.........

Big game is a true evil genius. Without his outlandish, creative, whitty, devious, off the wall input the NEMBA world would be alot dimmer. I think Big Game should be given his own section. Instead of General Discussion we need a section called Big Game Hunting or something of the like that only the Big Game can post topics to. Of course we would need someone else to moderate as the Big Game does, on occasion, need a swift tug on the reigns of moral dignity. The sad part of the number of times he posts, for the rest of anyway, is that HE ONLY POSTS AT WORK. This is the true measure of his evil genius. He's getting paid to do it. And people in his line of work do not come cheap. Rock on Big Game you sick bastard!

As for Hogboy. He should be called SPAMboy.
