A true Old School Hip Hop icon!

"He has a little soul, to rock n' roll

Every record that he touches turns to gold

He's well conducted, self-instructed

His styles were plied, heavily constructed

Mechanically inclined, and if you don't mind

We add spice to your life, time after time

And think about times, where he's a long laster

We rock our rhymes for the Jam-Master."

Was DMC Hip Hop or old school rap?

My rankings of the albums:

1) King of Rock

2) Run DMC

3) Raising Hell

4) Tougher than Leather

5) The other one (?)

J-A-Y are the letters of his name. Cutting and scratching are the aspects of his game.

Nursery Rhymes over computer generated drum beats just does not do it for me. Kevin

Your ignorance is well noted Knuckles. Just remember that ignorance is bliss and you are the happiest man alive. 8)

The man is entitled to his opinion.

Answer me this though:

Peter Frampton's "Frampton Comes Alive" - one of the greatest albums ever?

A true classic. Old School or Retro?

Neither old school nor retro. How about a flash in the pan? One of the best albums ever?? Hardly. Of course, here we are talking about opinions again. The talk box made that a highly overrated piece of work, and it's only used in two songs, the only two good ones.(opinion)

It is quite a sad state of affairs, though, when it is not exactly surprising that any rap artist dies from a gunshot wound. And then there are those of us who think that the very term "rap artist" is an oxymoron if there ever was one.

And just to piss off as many people as I possibly can in one post, the Beatles suck too.

Oh boy. I hope I don't go completely off...

First, I think you should have a little bit of respect. Hate to break it to you but whatever you listen to, if it's modern, a computer has touched it. Also, a lot of those bands take actually instramentals and combine them with other noises to make "the beat." If you ever listen to Dre or another quality rapper, they often feature violins or the like. As for nursery rhymes, perhaps you should even ATTEMPT to write something that matches the level of what rappers can do. Whether you feel the lyrics are meaningless or not is up to you, but you ought to at least respect what they can accomplish.

I'll give Frampton Kudos on the fact that he made a career out of a single 5 chord progression. I have about 30 songs written with guitar and lyrics that are better than 90% of the crap out there. Unfortunately if I sang the songs myself, I'd clear an arena out in 5 minutes

Some rap is ok. My wife bought Emminem or M+M or whatever the dudes name is. I actually like some of the stuff on his new album, but that guy has some serious unresolved childhood rage, as well as I. He can bust da rymes though. Cool stuff. Not all rap is bad. I like the guys who go out on a limb like Emminem and actually have an actual musician play an actual instrument like a guitar. 99% of rap music does suck though, and walk this way with DMC and Aerosmith has got to be the most horrific song I've ever heard. I can't stand walk this way. sweet emotion and the other 2 songs the frign idiots at the radio stations play 598,489,390,489 times. Aerosmith kicks major ass with their old school, pre 90's stuff, back when Tyler could sing. Listen to walkin the dog, and night in the ruts and the 70's stuff. Thats when Perry could play and Tyler could sing. They went downhill when they quit drugs, but with the old stuff, Tyler is one of the few singers that can give me shivers up and down my spine. That guy could sing. He can still sing, but I think they need to listen to their old records some more and play them with not as much variation as they do nowadays. And to all those radio programmers out there. IF I HEAR YOU SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT LONG ONE MORE TIME, I'M GONNA KILL MYSELF. I mean AC/DC has 567 awesome tunes and those *******s play the same 2 songs over and over and over and over and over and over. Jesus

I hate to break it to you Knuckles but, Walk This Way IS a pre-90's Aerosmith Song! As is Sweet Emotion!

Yeah I realize that those songs are pre 90's. What I am saying is that
Aerosmith went downhill Permanent Vacation and thereafter. And Walk this way was cool for the fact that it united Rap Artists with Rock and Rollers which before was unheard of. It opened up a lot of doors for musicians and Rap and Rock were ok to mix together. The idea of the song Walk this way with a rap mix in it was cool, but the musical content of the song in my opinion could not grab the attention of a 2 year old. Knuckle

Listen to walkin the dog, and night in the ruts and the 70's stuff.

"Big Ten Inch Record" is an awesome tune, as is "Mama Kin." ;D

I think Hip Hop. Most anything that came out of NYC in that era is Hip Hop. Rap is more hardcore and incorporates more violence and street thug poetry. Hip Hop is much looser topically and draws from a multitude of sources. ie. T.V., movies, advertising . . .

I am right with you, Knucklepopper, on the whole radio sucks thing. Commercial radio programmers just do not seem to get it. 95% of what they play is what the record companies want them to play, and goes for the old stuff as well. Most of what passes as music on the radio these days is pretty much crap. I mean, is there a worse band in history than The Offspring or Green Day? So I listen to talk radio or CD's all the time. When I am home, I often put on the AT&T Broadband Music Choice heavy metal channel to find out about new music.

In my opinion, the greatest band going right now is Tool. Excellent technical musicians, especially the drummer; great creativity and imagination, great vocals.

Screw all of that old crap. You know, I'm 35 and I just can't stand listening to anything I liked in high school, except for maybe Zeppelin and Hendrix. I like exactly one AC/DC song: For Those About To Rock.

WBCN tried changing their programming to Classic Rock not long after the whole Opie & Anthony flap. They got SO many complaints that they changed back to their normal stuff two days later. What does that tell you?

BTW, Opie & Anthony kicked ass. I hope they come back soon.

Cheeze-Wiz is right. Commercial radio and playlists suck. I had two close friends who had great spots on two rock stations here in Ct. One quit when the station was sold to Cox Communications. The other had the top rated Sunday night slot in the state on a Clear Channel station. He had one of the only spots that the D.J. retained near complete control of. Then one day, without warning, they switched formats and he was out of a gig. Here in Ct. there is a great independant station called WPKN in Bridgeport 90.5FM. They may not always play stuff you're into but they play alot of Jazz, Reggae and Alternative type music. In my car it's either PKN or a CD.
