How did this place come to have its' name?

I had herd several diffenrt explantions , but the one that seams to make the most sense is :

In the early to mid 80's a goup of vietnam vets would meet there on a somewhat regular basis and ride there motorcyles in there.

Not sure if that is the true story. I'd like to hear what other people have herd.
