View Full Version : What's in your Bag?

What’s in your Bag? I know knucklebrains will say he has two gonads the size of bowling balls in his bag, but I’m curious to know what’s in your toolbag or camelback. I generally carry the usual stuff, tube, pump, quick link, multi tool, zip ties, small first aid kit, goo. On long rides I’ll carry extra derailleur hanger. I guess the dumbest thing I used to carry was a big ass folding knife. One guy I ride with used to carry a extra derailleur, a chain, Stanley screw drivers and a adjustable wrench, the weight of all that crap would constantly open the zipper on his king size seat bag, and anyone riding behind him would get pelted with tools. I really get a kick out of all the useless crap people carry when they ride. What’s in your bag?

Add this to you bag: cut a small patch out of a plastic soda bottle to fix sidewall rips.

Same basic stuff as Todd(mini tool, derailer hanger, first aid) plus, Ducttape(gotta have it), chainbrake, spoke wrenches, and a folding saw for trail maintinence.

mini tool, tubes, CO2, chain tool, ducttape, health insurance card, few bucks and fig newtons...

notice no cell phone...can't help but think it will get busted and plus no coverage....

I switched to CO2 from a pump but have yet to use it...anyone got any insight on using cartridges vs. a pump...

You know cell phone has come in handy a couple of times, although I usually never carry it. The one time I didn’t carry my first aid kit, a bud crashed pretty hard and cut his knee to the bone. I took out the first aid kit to make room for he cell phone, well anyway, phone came in handy calling for help it just didn’t stop the bleeding

I had a buddy split his head open on a descent. A little guaze and a Ducttape headband helped him ride back to the car. A buddy with us had a cell phone, other than spreading gossip about the crash it didn't help much.

aside from the already mentioned items I usually have some antacids in the pack and in the winter I throw in one of those foil emergency blankets. They are about the size of a tube and will help keep you from turning into a frozen corpse if you have a mishap while riding alone.

hey gungywump what kind of folding saw do you cary? I've been looking for a small saw that actually works (not to carry all the time but as needed) LMK

I have a small sven saw that I in my pack when I'm hiking. I rarely take it with me on my bike, but it is one of the better small saws I have used. The whole thing folds up rather nicely (a little hard to explain how it works, easy to use once you see one in use). I think REI sells them.

I'm not sure of the brand(I'll try to look in the camelback tonight). But, I bought at Sears Hardware, it is made in Japan(not Craftsman), folds like a pocket knife, is sharp as f**k, weighs about the same as my pump, cost about $30 and I have sawed through 10" logs like butter.

I know Sandvik makes a similar one but my little Japanese saw kicks some serious arse!

I carry a Tube , Chain tool, Patch kit, small pice of tire sidewall, duct tpae and C02 cartgide , plus the dispenser/pump, some spre chaine links, an ID card and a couple of dollars plus some change. I love the C02 but My co2 dispenser can also be a pump, I figure if for some reason I run out of C02 cartidgies I can still at least pump it up by hand, It may take forever due to the short stroke, but at least it will get me moving agin.

???Okay, Noo and Splat carry money. Is that to pay the troll under the bridge? Is there hidden Red Bull vending out in the woods?

Yes, a folding saw is nice! I have not carried one in a while. Stay away from the Gerber, blade is very thin does not cut well, but on the flip side it's super light.

I just switched to my larger winter camelback, more room for extra cloths, lights, saw.

What's co2 do for you? Maybe a one shot quickie, unless you pack a few cartridges? At that rate you still need a pump. So why bother? Of course the dasterdly route: you don't need a thing if you ride in groups and your chums are always freighting well stocked backpacks.

My co2 gizmo , is a pump too! a very small pump but in an emergency it will help. I always caryy at least 2 c02 cartidges with me. I used to be that way , that why bother with CO2 , till i had a flat and the bugs were eating me so badly that I tried to hurry up and pump it up as fast as I could to get away from the bugs that I really did not have enought pressure and flatted again a little later . then the bugs had a field day with me.

Been there. I must have looked comical running up and down the trail while trying to pump the tire up. I was absolutely brutal.

Ever notice that a co2 inflated tube goes flat in a day? co2 permeates through butile (sp?) tubes. Still I agree that co2 can be useful for a quickie. For the trail I trim to the min and co2 looses to pump. The co2 setup ended up in a seat pack on the road thang.

In addition to the usual, I carry and extra cleat and screws, a couple triangal bandages, nitrile gloves and ibus make up my first aid kit. On some long rides I carry a few iodine tabs just in case I drain the bladder. GPS and a map find their way into my pack on most rides too.

I carry all of that stuff, both a cell phone and an awesome first aid kit I got of pricepoint that folds flat and has a ton of stuff. I also carry plastic bags, and a paper towel or two. They come in really handy if you bust a chian beyond repair.

do you have the 12g or the 16g? you will need 2 12g cartridges for mountain bike tire - the 12g WILL fill one road bike tire.

go to KMART for the cartriges - I got a box for $20 - I think there were 40 in there. They are in the paintball gun section and probably locked up.

btw, co2 rocks!

Don't forget who drug your bloody ass into Yale-New Haven on a Saturday night in the middle of Shotgun wound season!! I'm sure it was more pleasent in the Triage than in the waiting room. Somebody Quick! My Buddy's been Shot, Stabbed, and I think he's O.D.ing.

Hey GW, how can I say this without sounding ungrateful?

I know you had a long, long wait in the waiting room (which I certainly appreciate). But after I was given that prescription for those percs, didn't I hook you up w/ a little "something to put in your bag?"

I fear there is trouble with our relationship. Have you turned into a "scorekeeper?"

Crack Pipe, Rocks of Crack, usually 5-10 depending on the length of the ride. Coke, Pot, rolling papers. 2 liter Ginger Ale bottle filled with Miller Lite. Hmm, oh and a milky way or snickers, in case I get hungry after getting all doped up. Peace, Knuckle

I wonder Knuckle, how can you possibly be hungry for a snickers after getting all coked-up? Is it that you smoke so much pot it counter-acts the effects of the coke, giving you the munchies?

You are sending your body mixed messages. If you are going to mix drugs, only mix coke and heroin (and possibly PCP if you are going to do big drops --- you'll be invincible). Do yourself a favor. Don't mix coke and pot.

Best of luck.

Is your crack pipe glass? How do you keep it from breaking?

No, I don't use a glass crack pipe. I prefer copper. It has an added effect on the cerebral cortex when it gets real hot. SMOKE IT

Most of the usual stuff plus:
Duck tape rolled onto my pump
A few ty-wraps
Spare quick link
A side wall pop-through preventer cut from a piece of quart sized plastic soda bottle (just the riht curve). Tougher then a dollar bill and light but smooth the rough edges with a light sanding.

I used to carry a spare rear derailleur and have had the occasion to use them three times because the SRAM plastic knuckles break like a piece of un-cooked spagetti and it's nearly immposible to make a SS out of most soft tails.
Now I carry a SURLEY siglelator as it's cheaper and lighter and works really well making a temp. SS on a soft-tail.

I saw a bunch carry a piece of a plastic soda bottle for side wall rips. Doesn't that wear on or puncture the tube? Thats what carryin an extra dollar bill or two is good for.
I pretty much carry a patch kit, tube, pump, Dollars, spoke wrench (to at least get it so the tire doesn't rub), allen set, and a small needle nose pliers to pull the sharp stuff outa the tire when changin a flat.
I couldn't imagine tryin to carry a ton of stuff like other tools and co2 cartridges around for fear of sounding like I'm draggin a few shopping carts along with me.

Bump - Just wanted to mention that the Crank Bros. multi-tool is the best I've seen and/or used. It also has a T-25 torx head for disk rotors.

WOW, this could be a plug for camelbak to be sure. I remember when a bag referred to the saddle bag hanging off your seat, and even those Hokey triangular frame bags some people had. They are still around, but the camelbak type bag has taken over as the preferred "bag" for sure.
On a weekly ride, I usually carry tool kit, first aid kit, a tube and a snack. But those epic weekend rides, I go overboard for sure.
For those rides, I've always been known to have an assortment of spare parts that I've seen break on the trail, and I hate to be on a 4 hr ride with a group of friends, and have to cut it short or leave a friend behind to walk out b/c of a cat. failure. I have ALWAYS been thought of as crazy for some of the things I carry, invariably one of those ridiculed items comes to the surface for an emergency. I've NEVER had a second thought about the extra weight, I'm a Clydesdale anyhow, so what's a few more lbs?!.
-1st aid kit, incl Ibuprofin, In the summer-Epipen for insect sting emergencies(Blackstone Valley NEMBA fun-ride a couple summers ago was unknowingly routed right over a yellowjacket nest - there was one real bad anaphalaxis incident).
-map-sometimes compass-someday GPS.
-Crank Bro multi tool, and small pair needlenose with built in cutters.
-patch kit, tire lever, spare tube - I run Stans notubes on my bike, and have yet to flat bad enough to put a tube in, even on drops. (NOTUBES.com)
-pump/shock pump (if riding my fully)
-2 spokes - w extra long threaded section w nipples to fit nearly anything.
-(2) SRAM speed links,(1) 4link section of 8spd chain, (1) 4 link section of nine speed chain. chain tool.
-1 frt/1 rear quick rel skewer. I've seen both fail (not mine), and been there with a spare, it's usually from user error - IE repeated OVER tightening.
-1 seat binder QR bolt. - I was the hero on an ESCAPE ADVENTURES trip, when one of the rental bikes had a seat binder bolt fail, and they didn't have any extras in the van. I had one in my bag. Although, I heard of a similar story on another Escape trip, where the guide gave his binder bolt away and did the whole day with no seat!!!
-Misc stuff - zip ties, roll elec tape, cleat bolts, chainring bolt, some other typical bike bolts.
-few dollars,ID card,cotton Rag,assorted snacks etc.
-I start each ride with 100 OZ Water in my bag-(camelbak).
-sometimes I carry trail maint tools, lightweight cutters etc.
-sometimes the cell phone.
-sometimes arm warmers, shell, etc.

I'm nuts for sure.

C.P.
