This weekend while riding at a mtb destination far from southern NE I encountered a group of riders. One of the group was wearing a perfectly matching outfit with corporate logos, from his socks, tights, jersey, and gloves. At first I thought this fella must have been on the racing team, but upon seeing him from the side I realized that was not likely the case. I should have asked him what the deal was with the get-up, but didn't quite know how to phrase it. I then realized that I could air my confusion on the NEMBA forum and would ultimately become enlightened.
So here is my source of confusion...What is the attraction to logo wear? I mean if there are two products which perform equally well, and one costs more money because it has a huge corporate logo on it then the other, why would someone pay for the logo stuff? This phenomenon transcends biking. I have seen full grown men wearing Patriots sweats, t-shirt, sweatshirt, watch, jacket and hat all at the same time. What's up with that?

I can't believe I am going to comment on clothing issues as I am one of the least fasionable people in the world... - my 3 cents:
This can somewhat be linked to someone wearing Polo pants and shirt - Tommy H socks and underwear and hat (maybe with pants on too;) I have a friend that really feels the need to be decked out in matching everything on his bike - tights, jersey, shorts, helmet, shoes and all of these actually match his bike - does it matter what is on the shirt - possibly - I think he really just likes th e colors - personally it scares me but to each their own... I think it may come down to an anal retentive trait (oh come on we all have them!) that translates to matching clothing...
Ok - not sure I really said anything here but was able to waste 2 minutes and 3 cents:*)

J-bird,
I will defer all explanation of the "matching" issue to the one and only KnuckleSniffer. As Head of Merchandising for Platinums Bikes he is by far the most qualified to enlighten you on the subject.
I'm watching you Focker!

I got paid for 6 months for sitting at home doing nothing. finally my company laid me off. Now I'm doing a small job, on the side which is worth about 6 months salary at my last job. this is before I start another job in 6 weeks. I felt I needed a vacation before the new job. I did not however succumb to the evils of unemployment. If I had to yeah, but I want little or nothing to do with the system. I'll work at Wal Fart before I collect from this sorry ass state. I hate government, all politicians should be killed and all executives should be pushed off the empire state building. They all are a bunch of money hungry crooks out for themselves. So that's why when your at a company, you have to realize that no matter how worthfull they tell you you are, when the money gets tight, the execs will not suffer, you will. So you got to pimp the f*&^king company for all it's worth. I certainly pimped my company for the last 6 months, surfing nemba.org all day while getting paid. IT is still the best field to be in. And when I start my new job, all I have to do is keep the system running so the books get closed at month end. Thats about 5 hours of work a week. The rest of the time, I'll be surfing the web, nemba, and expanding my mountainbike brain cells. The economy might be ****, but I'm still pimpn IT so life is good. And to all those execs out there. I hope you die a nasty death, you Enron type greedy, slimy worthless *******s. It's because of you the country is going to ****, but as long as your pockets are lined with cash, thats all that matters. So F^&&*K YOU MR CFO, CEO. F*^&CK YOU

Ok, it's official, this thread is frayed.
The logo's, yes that was it, the logo's.
Here's my take on it. A company is making shirts in the USA and has a bunch of employee's making a decent living. Somone figures out that the same shirt can be made in the third world for 10% of the cost and sold at the same profit margin for half the price. The company moves the whole operation and the American public flocks to Sears to buy the cheaper shirts. Someone in marketing relizes that if a famous person is paid to be seen wearing their shirt then the brand will be associated with quality and therefore worth a few extra dollars. Now the same shirt costs 20% of the original cost, is sold for twice the price and the profit margin triples. If it sounds confusing , dont worry, they will hire a few more managers to keep track of it.
So where are we now. Happily dumping $40 into a cycling jesery made in China by children or convict slaves. Read the label, it's important. And may i suggest, Primalwear, same cost, same coolmax fabric, Made in the USA.

As far as MTB clothing goes, if it's comfortable and ON SALE, I'll buy and wear it. I prefer plain clothing though...solid shorts and shirts. I have one team jersey, but all the rest of my MTB clothing is solids.
I think people that prefer logo clothes do so because they like the look. It's all good...if it helps them enjoy the ride, then why the hell not wear that stuff?

Now that's what I'm talking about! A reason to sport logos out of jibberish. The logo in this case stands for something, Old Glory. That, to me makes some sense. Thanks Babs!

You have hit it right on the button. And I am with you on the sale. Why pay $70 for a PrimalWear or some other jersey with a supposedly chic design when you don't have to. Of course, some people do because they want to be thought of as the guy with the cool new Three Stooges jersey, not realizeing that everybody is thinking what an idiot they are for paying so much money for a stupid shirt.
I'm with the whole wicking material thing, and will only buy such clothing. But sale or no sale, we all know this **** is vastly overpriced. $90 for 2-layer "baggy" shorts? Whatever happened to the good old, uncumbersome lycra shorts?

Clothing prices are frign ridiculous. I will never pay over 20 dollars for a pair of short or shirt. I usually browse the web and buy like fox shorts on sale, or last years stuff. Cannondale had these cool freeride baggy pants or something. Black, real nice. Price $115.00 . Jesus Christ, 115 bucks. They are a bunch of ******* criminals like the rest of the companies that sell overpriced clothing. I like to go to a place called Decelles in Oct or Nov. They have like 50% off all the summer stuff. I got a bunch of no fear shirts, long and short sleeve for 10 bucks each. Clothing prices are out of control. People should boycott buying overpriced clothing. Knuckle

LOL @ Knuckle! Preach on, brother!! ;D
I'm always checking out websites for sales. I picked up a nice solid blue Fox shirt/shorts combo for $50 from Supergo a couple months back. They are 2001 models. Who the hell cares if it's discontinued!?
The best MTB baggies I own are plain black EMS brand. Comfortable padding, and pockets on each side. $35.

Sir Boon-alot,
I'll have to check out EMS.
I picked up some capilene long sleeve zip up shirts for cold weather outings from Kittery Trading Post in Kittery Maine - paid half of what I would for a similiar name brand Jersey with the same wicking materials. Not to mention these will serve double duty on the slopes...
Also tried the Pricepoint Label 8 panel shorts this year...at least half of what others charge and held up just fine...I even washed them a few times...
I am one with Discounted bike attire...
I'm a solid color (plain looking) man myself...

NOO, Kittery Trading Post Rock. Best outdoor store in Maine. Way better than that little company in Freeport.
I like wearing my 1980's Adidas or Puma pimpdaddy sweatsuits with Vans slip-on checkerboard sneakers and a Pro-Tec helmet. I usually carry an extremely large boombox on my shoulder and blast classic Run DMC and Public Enemy while I ride.

I was real snooty about the spiderman suits, always rode retrogrouch in cotton, then won one of the NEMBA zoot suits this spring. That converted me to synthetics.
Additions to the wardrobe have come from local thrift stores.
Primal's stuff does look pretty cool, I have to admit...
As to matching factory outfits, well, sorta goes with the bikes as jewelry thing, y'know...

I see a lot of people buying clothes from Long S Cycles at Mount Snow. Their corporate clothing is cheaper than any plain jersey I have ever scene. I guess it's both a matter of fashion AND frugality. Neither of which I feel is something to be ashamed of.
