I thought this would be a very interesting topic. Sure to pass the three page mark for sure. Myself, well I'm an Oracle Database Consultant. My flat rate is usually $200.00 per hour. But these cut throat days it's been $75 an hour. Not bragging, Info Technology sucks these days and I wish I had been an auto mechanic. Computers suck. However my flat rate does not limit me to Oracle. I'll do whatever you want me to do for $200 dollars an hour, besides male sex. Heck, I don't care, I'll gut rats with a stone if you want, grind up a titanium road bike frame and snort it. :-X Whatever you want. So tell us all what you do for work.

My title: "Payroll System Administrator." Basically, I manage the payroll system for a group of Massachusetts hospitals. If it's PeopleSoft, I know it. 8)
I do not make $200 an hour.

The place I use to work at went with People Soft. The implementation started 10/00, they are still not live yet, and they have peoplesoft themselves implementing the project. :-X I left after the oracle conversion took place. They were sick of all the upgrades and version expirations. Well I said what will peoplesoft run indefinetly without upgrades and version desupportifications?? I think not. Well it's good to know any software inside and out. Peoplesoft is up there with Oracle. Kevin

We went live last week on 8.3. And we hit our original go-live date. WOO HOO! 8.4 is already out, and 8.8 is being released in the next few months, so we already need to start planning another upgrade. At least it keeps me employed for now. 8)
We run on Oracle.

Well just so you don't feel bad, $200 dollars an hour was in the good ole .com days. I pimped a contract at EMC for about 2 years. Damn I milked that place dry. If I tell a customer my rate is $200 per hour they'll laugh me out of their office nowadays. $100 is about tops these days, when and if you can find work, and the customer will squabble for days over this guy for 110/hr or that guy for 105/hr, it's frign ridiculous. As long as the execs get their fat check. Well let me tell you Mr. CFO; soon enough we'll be driving the train and telling you it's $200/hr for me to get out of bed, another $200 at the door and $200/hr there after. Soon enough my friend. dot com is gone, but there is another breakthrough coming in the light of the way information travels that is going to completely turn upside down all notions on the way we think information should get from one place to another. Within the next 5 years, you'll see. And that will open the doors for all us consultants to come in and pimp your purchase orders till theres nothing left but powdered freekn milk my friend. Our day will come. Peace

ok, so is everyone who hangs out on this forum a software geek who rides bikes?
I'm a programmer myself. I work in the consulting division of a software company that whores me out to write custom versions of our apps and custom interfaces to work with them. My employer bills me out at some ridiculous rate that doesn't seem to be related to what I am paid.

Microsoft systems, networks, and applications, mostly e-commerce. Currently I'm involved in monitoring and support of a geographically strung out set of server farms from Texas to Vermont. For the most part, it's all done from Vermont. Trails start from the far side of our parking lot, so I usually head out noonish.

All this talk of computer programs, systems, management and cunsulting. Let me chime in for the few(mabee i'm the only one) people out there typing with calloused hands.
I'm a Construction Superintendent, which is most of the time a Mgmt position , but when between the $mil.+ projects there is some meinial labor to do. Last week for instance I demolished 60 sq ft of concrete sidewalk, by hand, and repoured, shingled 900sqft of roof, insulated a kitchen addition.......
Aint it grand we all have somthing to do with our days and Gods blessing of health and mind. Work is Good!!!

Another computer geek... database admin in such a horrifically boring specialty that I was able to weasle full-time pay and benefits for part-time work. No, not to feed the riding habit (I wish), to pick up the rugrats after school.
I don't make $200/hr though.

October 21st, 2002, 11:31 AM
Well what I'd like to say is that I am a professional mountain biker sponsored by my employer (which isn't too far off). Not anywhere near pro but my job does fund the habit. My title is Computer Serivices Coordinator. Primarily NT/2000 servers, Citrix server, Exchange Server, after that webmaster for the district site and unfortunately desktop support. Good majority of the people I work with have very little knowledge of computers. I am Fred from CDW!!!!!
I am currently looking for new work, the desktop support thing is very boring!! Unfortunately everyone wants senior network admins with MCSE's and such.
Bright side, job gives me 5 weeks vacation a year! I can take it anytime I want. Downsides - too much work + not enough staff = no time to use the vacation. When I do have time, don't have money to go anywhere.
Ok I am going to stop my bitchin. Could be worse, I could not have a job! But that would leave more time for biking, but no money to pay for parts!
Well thats what I do.

What is it with all the computer geeks out there. I am a structural engineer although most of my time these days is spent managing other engineers.

October 21st, 2002, 07:39 PM
It's the begining of the end. The engineers are managing other engineers. Soon we will have lots of pretty drawings with nice straight lines and no one who can put the thing together in a round world.
At least I'll have work for years making "adjustments in the feild".

Screw coorporate America. I see these dummies spend 1 to 3 million dollars implementing Oracle. By the time the project is finished the version is obsolete and they have to do it all over again. I can not stand bean counters, CFO's and the rest of the executive cut throat jerk offs. All they care about is their f$^&%$ng BMW and their 600,000 dollar house in Westwood or Needham. They make all their money squeezing the life out of the working man. F-U to all you executives out there pimping the **** out of this country. Your the ones that have made the economy ****, but as long as you cash out when everyone else is getting unemployed struggling to make ends meet. Rot in hell Mr. CFO, I hope the sniper kills you all you greedy money hungry *******s. Whew. Sorry, but I had to get that off my chest. I'm sick of these jerk offs skating through life like they do. Like all the *******s who cashed out at Enron. And I hope Martha Stuart gets burned alive. Too many years of the good life, ha Martha? Oh yeah, I am not a computer geek. I have 6 tatoos. So that automatically excludes me. I don't drive a BMW either, but a VW, so I'm not a yuppie. Actually the only reason I am in information technology is because it is a joke. I get paid endless money doing nothing because other people don't have the initiative to figure the **** out or read instructions. It's easy work, most days 10am to 2pm, but sometimes it's hell. Do I like the work? No, I think it sucks and is the most boring f..ing thing in the world. I hate computers. Think of this and how much technology has advanced when you start thinking your in the golden age of technology. How many years has data resided on a round piece of metal powered by a motor? I mean come on. If I had the brains, which I don't becuase I am not a gifted MIT nerd, I would come up with something better than that. Pretty sad to think that your critical data still resides on a spinning piece of metal powered by a motor; still after about 4 decades. Unbelievable, it's 2002

I work in a 24,000 sqft wood shop. We build custom store fixtures for high end retail. Lot’s of Wood, Metal, Glass, MDF. We do stores for Coach Leather, L.L.Bean, Lacoste, Cole Haan, about three per month all over the country. We draw it, build it, paint it, ship it, and install it. I’m a project manager, kind of a tour guide for the whole process. Currently we are in the process of modifying our machines to mass produce solid GOLD bikes.
I also work at Berger’s Bike Shop on Saturdays, that’s my fun job!

Currently we are in the process of modifying our machines to mass produce solid GOLD bikes.
You might want to tell the masses that there is quite an extensive waiting list for the Solid Gold bikes.
My explanation: While the cost of our Solid Gold Bike is prohibitive to most people, those with actual money regard this a secure investment, sure to appreciate in value and nonetheless, consider it a bargain at its very high price tag.
(Yes, if you have to ask how much, clearly you can't afford one. Oh well, you can always buy an aluminum or platinum bike)

Instead of an "any" key, left-click your start button, choose programs, then accessories, then command prompt. Now enter "fdisk", and hit the enter key. When the prompt comes back, "format C:" and enter again.
This will solve all of your current computer problems, and allow you to ride a lot more. ;D
