I was asked to post this note.
If anybody has any information contact Matt Jans at
matthew.jans@umb.edu

Stolen Saturday 10-05-02:

Bright Red mountain bike. No stickers. Seat leash (gray seat) and headlight mount (no headlight). Straight, gray handlbars with vertiacal grips on the ends. Looks like new with a few scrapes on the frame.

Taken from Elton St. near Savin Hill in Dorchester (reportedly by some youth).

It's a cheapie, but it was my only. Please keep a lookout in used stores. Thanks.

These stats are from 1999 but still eye opening...

Kryptonite's Top 10 Worst Cities for Bike Theft*

1. New York, NY
2. Chicago, IL
3. Miami, FL
4. Philadelphia, PA
5. Washington, DC/Baltimore, MD
6. San Francisco, CA (includes Berkeley, Oakland)
7. Boston, MA (includes Cambridge, Somerville)
8. Portland, OR
9. Denver (includes Littleton)
10. (tie) Austin, TX
(tie) Los Angeles, CA
(tie) San Diego, CA

The latest FBI Uniform Crime Report (1999) shows that the average price of the bicycles stolen is on the rise. Over 326,000 bicycles were stolen in 1999 with the average price of more than $338. That is well over $110 million lost yearly.

I lived in Boston proper for 9 years and always worried about my bikes...I never any problems but did have several break-ins to my car....Good Luck.

what, Hartford didn't make the list??

October 10th, 2002, 04:24 PM
Despite any claims I don't think Hartford is classified by many as a "City". It struggles with identity crisis similiar to other 'almost metropolitan' areas in the Region (e.g. Providence..)

Although Bradley In't Airport is the 'gateway to New England'....shouldn't most of CT be given to NY?

Technically, I think Hartford is classified as a "shithole."

You should enjoy the ride and take in the sights as Boston is rich in history, has embarked on one of the largest civil engineering projects to date, and si also an academic mecca...therefore you might enjoy the sights of the coeds (especially springtime)...especially a man of your stature...let the ladies know you have two stars near your name....

Fishy -

Just mixing it up on Thursday afternoon....

I'm still bitter about take away them Hartford Whalers... No more Whalers...that why they have more fish these days (squished or not)...

I have ridden Shenipshid (sp?) a few years ago and it was a good ride...that place still rideable?

I actually like Boston, I just would not like to live in the heart of the city and I hate doing a drive through it. Also I actually plan on attending school around there (if all goes well in the application process).

Good luck with those applications. I'm sure you'll have a blast wherever you end up....

Living in Boston, I found the best places to ride are: Foxboro/Wrentham, Blue Hills, and Lynn Woods. Depending where you live ou're looking at 30 to 40 minute commute to each place....you can also get to Vietnam or head south to Wompatuk...

Road riding through the city is a good adrenaline rush....keeps you alert...I only had one major incident...hit and run...BMW drove off and I was the lucky winner of 2 months physical therapy...

I have since moved to Seacost of NH..didn't want to raise a family in Boston...

My brother lives in Belchertown (near Amherst) when I head out I always bring my bike as he has some singletrack behind his house...any other spots close by you suggest I check out?

okay, embargo off ;)

The shenip lives on. I am a bit worried that between the DEP supervisor there and a collaboration between NETRA and some snowmobile group that they managed to cobble up enough jing for a SWECO (sp?) (it's a heavy duty trail cutting machine). My chief worry is that the intent is to tame the network of old roads that have been regressing to trails back into service roads again (i.e. widening, clearing babyheads, etc.). Trying to convince folk up there that this is not a real good thing to do, but who knows if they are interested in listening. Time will tell.

If Shenip turned you on you are only touching the tip of the iceberg. You've got to do some more sampling. There are some real tasties to be had.

Haha, Bentley and Babson... I hope I can control my party animal inside me in such a festive environment. :-P

If he lives in Belchertown, Holyoke Range would be a good place to go for a spin. There is some information on the Pioneer Valley site.
