Hey I thought an interesting topic would be asking everyone what type of bike they have. What they have done if anything to upgrade it, your dream bike, and what parts do you dream about at night for your bike. For starters I'll go. I am just getting back into mtn biking. I have a 1998 or so FSR X/C. I recently bought a Cannondale Gemeni 1000. I've so far put a race face diabolus stem and race face 2" risers on it with black yeti lock grips. On order I have the following. MRP bonz combo cranks (if they ever finish making them) http://www.mountainspeed.com/bonescombo/
I also have on order
Cane Creek 1.5 headset
Diabolus 1.5 headset (so glad I bought the 1 1/8 stem a month ago)
Manitou Sherman 152mm Breakout 1.5 forks.
My wife thinks I'm nuts and I am, A $3000.00 bike and now $1000.00 worth of parts on order. It's all good. Well I sold my ATV's and Dirt Bike and now this is my new obsession and as an added bonus, I'm losing my Homer Simpson Custom Belt Hanger. Let me know what you guys are riding and what you are using for parts. I know I'm not the only parts junkie out there. PEACE

I got two bikes.
Bike #1) Titus Quasi Moto. It's got mostly XT components, so nothing really needs to be upgraded. If anything, I'd like to get a better set of rims (I have Mavic 223's right now).

Bike #2) 2001 Rocky Mountain Spice. I just replaced the cassette, big ring, chain, and tires. I'd like to upgrade this to XT (it's got Deore/LX parts right now). It's also got a few Rocky Mountain components that I'd like to swap out.

Trek 8000 mountain bike (LX/XT aluminum hardtail)
Trek 2200 road bike (all 105, aluminum frame, carbon fork, rolf wheels)
Kind of boring, but they both work well. Hopefully there will be a full-suspension bike on my list by next spring. Maybe a Trek Liquid (no, I don't have some fetish with Trek bikes, i just happened to get a great deal on the road bike the year after I bought the mountain bike).

Hey Baboon or whatever your name is. That Titus is sweet. I'm assuming thats a X/C Bike? If I was into X/C that is the bike I'd buy. That baby is nice. I'll have to throw up some pics of my gemeni. Nothing great, just stock for now till all my frign parts arrive. That's my life, waiting for parts and since the 1.5 stuff is so new, I got no prices on anything, no definite availability. Heres my rig without the MRP Bones cranks, without the Cane Creek 1.5 Headset, without the Race Face Diabolus 1.5 stem, without the 1.5 Answer Sherman Breakout forks. Damn I hate waiting for parts. 2 Weeks after I bought this bike they came out with the gemeni 900 which has the 1.5 152mm forks. So my $3000.00 bike will end up costing me another $1000.00 to get a decent pair of forks on it. I diddn't like the psylo sl forks it came with, hence the upgrade. Oh well. PEACE. Kevin

You can actually set up my Titus to be XC, freeride, or DH. It can be built to as light as 25 lbs. Mine is set up to be a rugged XC bike (31 lbs). I've got it set for 5.9" of rear travel. You can make a couple of adjustments to set it up for downhilling. I know a couple of people that use this bike for DH racing. It's very versatile. I was killing my XC bike (the Rocky Mountain) with the type of riding I do, so I bought the Titus. I'll keep the Rocky for XC racing.
Sweet looking Gemini. Looks like a Jekyll.

Deore is a little heavier and (from what I hear) not as durable. I don't notice any real difference except for the shifters. The LX seem to shift hella better than the Deore.
Looking at your bike, I doubt you have Deore. Probably an LX/XT combo.

I love riding as well as my bike. I just don't get this whole "look at my bike" stuff. What's the point? You know what impresses me? Seeing someone and their bike nicely coated with dirt, mud, dinked up pedals and cranks, non-useable large rock-damaged chain rings and other signs of obvious use and abuse. I don't get those people who orgasm after spending an hour cleaning and shining their bike after every ride, and god forbid actually have purchased that useless product called bike wax, just so people might look at it and go, "ooooh. dude nice bike." I happen have a nice bike too that I paid lots of good money for. Big whoop. It's dirty and scratched and dinked and not fit for the front page of Mountain Bike Magazine... and that's the way I like it!

Thats cool MR Cheese, I just like to take care of whatever I own. I abuse my body and my bike, and I don't try to keep it from getting nicked or scatched, but I like to keep it clean. It's part of the fun for me. Also 10 years from now, I'll still have my bike and people will look at it and think it's brand new. It's just part of the fun for me, but I hear ya, I ride with dudes that have functional bikes, but never clean them, it's all good. PEACE bro

October 5th, 2002, 01:34 PM
Well , Keeping it clean is a Good thing ! it will make the components/bike work better and last longer ! Very simple very simple if you have dirt on things it will work its way into the bearings once in there it will cause the bearing to wear faster. Also Mud and whatever left sitting on a bike frame over time will be corrosive, espcially if you do any winter riding and ride the road a little you will get SALT !
I can see nothing wrong with keeping the bike that clean. I just have one question , Wanna clean my bike for me ? ;D

GT Idrive 5.0 added Sun DS-2 XC rims with Shimano XT hubs. Also added Shimano Deore Mechanical Discs. Nice bike!
Crapondale F700 SX Light as hell, but one of the most expensive pieces of CRAP I own. Last time I buy one of those.
Diamondback Response. Not much added but the bike is great. But its had its time. Put a new Rock shock Judy TT before I bought the GT.
Now looking for the next purchase. Thinking of Rocky Mtn or Specialized.

Question, why does everyone hate cannondale's so much. I own one, but know nothing about them. Seems like a quality bike to me. Made in USA as well, but I hear people say **** about them all the time. I mean call it what you want, your entitled to your opinion, but my gemeni is a nice bike I think. The welds are all clean and I think it's a fantastic bike. Will the frame hold up to my abuse? I don't know, I've only had it for a couple months. But I hear so much bad stuff about them, crapondale, crack and fail. Did I buy a piece of ****? Kevin

This is the wrong color and heck, may even be the wrong year. *shrug* Closest I could find on the web, we don't have pics of ours online yet.. It's a Fuji Sunfire. Very very basic, as bought from store, no new stuff, no frills. Still has the plastic pedals (very chewed up by rocks), though Carsion's trying to convince me that I need clipless. ;) Couple dings on it, small pack strapped to the underside of the seat, odometer, tiny NEMBA sticker... ;D

Cannondales, keven, garnered a bad rep for having many of their frames constantly cracking in years past, and are notorious for managing to find a way to put deore parts onto a 3k bike. They also like to throw out "latest technonlogy" bikes at exorbitant prices, so you can find out that it neither works or improved anything after shelling out an ungodly amount of money, like all this 1.5 **** coming out..just another way to bilk one out of their hard earned cash. BTW, what could you possibly not like about the Psylo fork your Gemini came with?!?..its one of the best, most versatile forks on the market...one of the absolute best for heavy trail riding. Im thinking that the Psylo just wasnt expensive enough for your vanity...errr...riding prowess. you, my friend, are a salemans wet dream..but hey...if you have the money and buying these things really makes you happy, then by all means keep it up...otherwise, stop being such a tool. 8)

...and to answer your end tag...they make needlessly expensive bike parts because people such as yourself will buy them.

I'm with Mr. Cheeze. I beat the **** out of my $300 raleigh m50 every day. I run all recreational components (alivio/acera) except for my sweet M-545 clipless pedals. My fork sux, My wheels are never perfectly straight, and it won't change gears right every few days. Every couple weeks my bike is so covered in mud that the only moving parts are the cranks, chain, and wheels--forget about chainging gears. I ride on rocky trails with 3 foot root drops onto rocky landings. I also go urban assault and do some trials with my bike. I also do some jumping at high speeds. Once I landed at such a high speed that my brake pad got jammed under my rim. I am one of the few people to endo because of their rear brake. I slid about 15 feet on the ground with my bike. I got pretty injured and I really messed up my bike. I went home, fixed it and went riding again the next day. The only reason my bike works is because it is covered by the warranty. I know for a fact that I am too advanced a rider for my bike, but I prove that I can be just as crazy as anybody with a bike with a couple of zeros missing from the price tag, and ride the next day without needing an overhaul and detail work.

1. I love seeing other people's rides - it keeps me up to date on what's out there. And it's nice to congratulate people that are so happy with their "new" toys.
2. I agree with what Splat said - clean components will last much longer than muddy crapped up ones.

October 7th, 2002, 01:43 PM
I never said anything about not cleaning components. Obviously a clean chain and derailleur and pedals, cables and rims are necessary in order to avoid unnecessary problems. That's just common sense.
As for the rest of it... if it doesn't come off from a light spray from the hose, it ain't coming off. I have better stuff to do than take cue tips to the nooks and crannies of a chnk of metal that is only going to get dirty again the next day or week.

Dude, just because you had a bad experience with a cannondale does not mean I will. I've read the reviews on my bike and no one has had a problem with a frame yet. And if I like to spend my money on bikes and bike parts, thats what I like to do. I happen to like the idea of 1.5, so I am going to get the 1.5 forks. I honk the **** out of my bike and bottom those psylos repeatedly. They are a good fork, but not good enough for me, maybee for a sunday trailrider like you but not for me. Peace Kevin

Ok, I admit, I was a bit harsh. Canondale does make a good bike if you feel like spending the money on them. I know a good amount of die hard canondale riders. Probably why I went for one. The bike is a feather weight! The lefty is an excelent fork! But it was definately not the bike for me. It could not take what I had to throw at it. So yes the Canondale engineers do come up with some great ideas. But are some of these technologies really worth it??
Last year I was doing a 30 mile epic. It was the first time I've done an epic. Yes I did ride my canondale and it could have been the weight of the bike that let me finish the ride. But the ride leader said I improved so much since the beginning of the season. I said it was due to the bike and he said it isn't just the bike.
So in short, Mr Cheeze and Shub are right! It is the rider not the bike that makes the different. You can go into a shop, buy all the expensive gear and the top of the line bike that you can afford, but that doesn't make you a good rider. Now I am not saying you are a bad rider, hell you are probably a better rider than me. I've seen the Gemini and have to admit it is nice lookin! And it probably certainly gets the job done. Plus, they are a local company here in CT. But I still think their prices are a bit high.
Hey on another note of $$$ bikes check out this past month's Bike, pg 66. Now who would really spend 10K on a bike with mostly standard components??? Even Bike didn't have much to say about the bike. Just out of curiousity, does anybody know why the Colnago CF2 has such a high price tag??????
Ok, enough babble!!

Thats a sweet ride man. I like the Santa Cruz Bullet or Bullit or whatever. If I had known about those bikes I would have bought one instead of my cannondale. I just found out from my bike shop that there is a recall on some of the gemeni frames. Mine looks ok, but they have to use some tool on it to see if it was one of the bad ones. So I guess that's why they call them crack and fail. Well ****, I don't know anything about bikes, I've been out of the mtb scene for the past 5 years. I just went to a shop in framingham, saw the gemeni, went to another bike shop down the street and they had one for a little less. I wish I had done some more research. Now I'm worried that I'm going to succumb to the evils of crack and fail. Oh well, by the time I get my gemeni finished the only thing cannondale will be the frame, so if need be, I'll go buy another frame, at least I got all the latest and greatest parts. I'm a parts junkie. Total Junkie. Kevin

Mr. Knuckles wanted to see my bike! First off Your Gemini is sweet, you just wanted a opinion on your fork color which in my opinion is gay. Secondly your bike is better than mine, it costs more DUH.
Back to Cannondale, Yes I have broken three swing arms (single arm design) on my last Jekyll, but the warranty and service was great, new part in less than 2 weeks. I've learned the limits of this frame, It's no Big Hit Whore like the Gemini. The Jekyll is however is a great long travel XC bike. I can't deal with heavy bikes, Long travel & lite weight is my Holy Grail.
I've got my eye on the Trek Liquid 30 for next summer.

I get allot of comments out on the trail about a one sided fork. It reminds me of when I first started snowboarding, 16 years ago. Does it turn? Can you stop? How do you get on the lift? Lefty is a little queer looking, (although not as bad as Knuckledumper's). Once you get over appearance, Lefty performs excellent! I actually have a lefty on my hardtail as well. Why one leg? WEIGHT! Hub and leg are incredible stiff, almost no flex. Next time your in the bike shop, squeeze front tire between knees and reef on the handle bars, titanium lower leg has alittle more flex than the standard version. 4 inches of travel is nice and easy to lock out. Stay away from ELO, batteries in a fork is alittle silly. And yes changing a tire is a breeze. Biggest down side to lefty, is the inability to quickly remove front wheel. If that's how you normally transport your bike, forget about it! Four of my friends have Lefty's on their bikes, and other than one 9volt battery, there are no complaints. ;)

Yo Splat, ELO (electronic lock out). On top end models there is a 9volt battery in the top of fork, connected to a small yellow button mounted near your shifter. Push for lock or unlock. Seem like an excessive gadget, I have no problem doing it manually, very easy access right under handle bar. 03' jekylls have a rear shock ELO,but again I have no problems reaching between my legs and grabbing my knob.
Here is a pic of my hardtail.

That Montague is awesome. I was in on some of the "secret developmental testing" of that rig. A former employee who worked on the project was one of my ride buddies and he'd bring the prototype (made by a certain local frame builder) on some of the MTB rides.
Initial expectation was that it would collapse and kill or cripple him on the first ride. After some successful bump tests out side my house we hit the trails. He beat the hell out of the thing (relatively speaking judging from the rider, who's likeness is proudly displayed in the Crash n' Burn thread).
The damn thing held together and the design you see there is initially the same as the first working protype (which I painted for the Taipai show). It was spec's a little better and the tubeset on the rear was full cromo but almost identical.

Depends on the purpose. This is my all purpose cross country bike, a 2002 Santa Cruz Chameleon w/ a 2002 5" travel Marzocchi DJ2 fork, Avid front disk, RaceFace cranks and Rhyno Lite rims w/ 2.35" tires. Runs a 34x18 ratio which is a stellar choice for the local riding which includes lots of short steep grunts and some longer extended ones. If you spin like a gerbil, you can push it to about 21 mph but cruising speed is between 11 and 15 mph.
The bike is a single speed as you can tell from the pix. Awesome for just about anything except for wheelie drops (geared too high). The only choice for epic rides.

Nice bikes guys. I have several too. But of them all, this is my favorite ride by far:
Solid Gold Frame
Solid Gold Headset
Solid Gold Hubs
Solid Gold FR Rims
Solid Gold Stem
Solid Gold Seatpost
Solid Gold Handlebars
Solid Gold Front Skewer
Solid Gold Seat Collar
Solid Gold Brakes
Solid Gold Fork (100 mm)
Solid Golid Tires
Solid Gold Chain
Solid Gold Bar Ends (of course!)
My casette is some crappy allegre ( I snagged it of of my neice's huffy). You'd think after spending all of that loot on solid gold components, I'd at least have sprung for the solid gold cassette. What can I really say? I suppose I'm just full of contradictions and inconsitancies.
But be honest with yourself, isn't that why women hate me and men want to be me? Wait, I misspoke... Isn't that why women want to be me and men want to hate me? No, I still don't think that's the right question. This is it: Isn't that why a woman doesn't want her man to be me so she doesn't have to hate him ? No, that can't be it either. Hmm. I'll need some serious quiet time with no distractions to think about this. Luckily, I'm at work all day.

And heres the all purpose XC climbing bike (has gears vs. the SS) as well as general duty FR and all around fun-hog. The only place it falls down is when my spinfdly legs can't get it up to cruising speed as fast as needed for those XC hammerfests. Once it's moving though, look out. I think this is getting really close to the bike that I've had the longest ever. I absolutely adore it. Without a doubt the most versatile and funnest bike I've even owned.
It's an '00 Bullit w/ an '01 JrT. I added a Risse shock in the rear to give it a sweet 8" travel out back and 6" up front. I just swapped the Hayes disks out for Avid mechanicals (can't beat the power). RaceFace cranks/BB (NSX ISIS), SRAM 9spd ESP, Sun SingleTrack rims/Shimano XT hubs w/ Maxxis DH Mobster 2.7 rr/High Roller 2.35 fr. Pretty much bombproof even with my lard butt on the medium size hits.

OK Couch,
That may be the "frame" that you have had the longest but the bike is a constantly evolving thing. I dont recognize any parts (other than the seat post clamp) as originally purchased. However I do like the red stem.

I'm in the process of building a new steed. I bought a Turner XCE. The parts I've bought to put on her are as follows:
XT Hydrolic brakes
LP composit xc riser bar
FSA orbit headset
Thompson seatpost and stem
Rhyno Lite rims with xt hubs
Not sure on tires yet
XT cassette
XT cranks
XTR front and rear der.
XT shifters
Haven't ordered yet but I think I'm getting Fox Vanilla RLC
I have a Romic coming on the rear
I'm quite anxious to start getting the stuff in to start building it

Tires- go with Tioga DH2.1 in nrear and Tioga XC Extreme 2.1 in front.
As for the XTR front and rear deraillers. I've never been able to justify the extra expense. A front derailler is a front derailler. XTR on the rear brakes just as easy as an XT but doesn't cost nearly as much. Go XT and get a Sedis/Sram chain.

Yep, that's the only thing I hate about the bike, no good place for a water bottle cage. BTW, it's there for the battery to my light, which is a waterbottle style pack.
Thanks for the kind words on the bike. I absolutely adore that rig. Of all my bikes ever, this is my favorite. I'd really miss it if I didn't have it.

Heard that Santa Cruz waas going to concentrate on production this year. With such a hot ride as the Blur, that will be a challenge!

One of those crappy MTB magazines (Mountain Bike?)reviewed the Blur and said it's one of, if not, THE best bike ever made. That's an awfully bold thing to say.

October 25th, 2002, 12:51 PM
That's got to make the folks at Specialized pretty angry with all the $$$$ they have put into their new xc rig. I saw one of the Specialized bikes and the Brain is kind of wierd. Seems to have one function, xc racing. The blur seems to be a bit more versatile.
Whatever, my superlight rocks and it will be hanging with me for another couple of years...
October 25th, 2002, 12:55 PM
Is my old friend Boon and our pal JT.
Seriously, I heard the same as JT - that they will focus on production (LBS was told by Santa Cruz) but with the Blur, Superlight, Heckler, Bullit, Chameleon, V-10 and now a road bike...they will have challenges.
Next month they compare the Epic (Specialized) to the Blur, we'll see what they say.
I still have my eye on the superlight...

OK, if SC focuses on production, how much will customer service suffer? I can tell you that in my experience with Titus, they basically have no customer service. Oh yeah, production sucked too. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WAIT FOUR MONTHS FOR A FRAME AFTER BEING TOLD IT WILL ONLY BE THREE WEEKS. At least the bike was awesome when I finally got the damn thing.

2001 Element - put on sram 9.0sl shifters/der (hate rapid fires) and avid mech discs
1995 Rockhopper (my practice wrenching bike)
IAB, I hope you don't mind me saying this but your wife Rocks!!
Shite......I can't do squat when it comes to wrenching and here you have a wife that can do her own repairs and kick major arse on the trails (as I know well enough from a first hand arse whooping at Soapstone back in 2002!)
You are one lucky dude!

First off, as it's been said, it's not about the bike. But, a really nice bike with high-end components is friggin' awesome. My rides:
2001 Rocky Mtn Instinct - my favorite ride to date
1998 Litespeed Ocoee - racing/commuting/riding with kids
1997 GT Riccochet - former SS, now a parts bike. Less than 6 rides on it since bought used.
I've also owned a '97 SC Heckler (great bike) and a few Trek Y-frames (fun but not durable, and they bobbed)

I have an 02 Gary Fisher Suger 3+. I switched to a Belair saddle and Dumped that Useless Bontrager crank set and went with an LX I stole off my hard tail. I plan to toss an xt on and return the LX to the hardtail. Other wise its got xt components and hayes discs. I'm slowly gonna swap out the bontrager parts as they break or bend. (This shouldn't take long.) :D I'd include a pic But the bike is out on a warranty return with a severely bent frame. The hard tail is a 99 GT avalanche witch is in pieces right now because I'm trading the 16" frame for a 98 Zaskar 18". That bike has pretty much stock components XT and LX. All I have really changed is tires. The Michelin wild gripper hot s is workin prety well right now. Ok now finally I'm lookin for a downhiller. Theres a sweet GT dhi on the classified section of this site but a bit outa my price range. I'm lookin to spend about a grand. If anyones got one or knows of one. Gimme a shout.Been watchin E bay as well. John

Kevin
Not a piece of Junk. Well at least I dont think so. They are just so damn expensive. alot of the cost goes into those finished welds on the frame I think. Labor costs a fortune these days. I personally don't care what the bead looks like as long as it doesn't give way while I'm tryin to ride. Boing

Just so you all know, I tried a blur. It was really really nice, and the replaceable drop out and D. hanger was the best I have ever seen. The only thing about the bike is that it is EXTREMELY adjustable and will take you a long time to get right- but once that happens it is all good.
