rear spring disengages?

is it normal for a rear spring on a FS bike to go slack and slide around a bit when the rear suspension arms on a bike extend downward; say, off a jump. i never noticed this on my bike before, but all of a sudden its doing this even when i just pick the bike up and the rear wheel is off the ground.

This happened on a AMP B3 that I had a few years ago. The
spring rate that came stock on the rear shock was too
high for my body weight so I had to run it with no preload.
This caused the sprong to be "loose" whenever the suspension was unloaded. The fix was to buy a spring that
had a softer rate so I could run some preload and the looseness went away.
