So, what do you have? A cobbled together peice of recyclery you've converted to a singlespeed or a dedicated SS machine.

Currently, I've got three.

Here's my first one, a beautious 1991 Ted Wojcik hardtail converted to SS with Surly's singleator.

We featured singlespeeds in an old issue of SingleTracks. If you missed it, check out http://www.nemba.org/digitalnemba/stfe_Singlespeed.html

Hey I saw your Ted Wojcik along with someone's Barracuda and another SS on a SS web site just today. Sweet rig.

What are your other two?

I would have to go the recycle route considering the budget I have to work with. Any recommendations of where I might find a great old bike to convert?

Bianchi B.U.S.S - Right now this bike is set up for Saturday morning coffee runs & semi-urban rides. Geared 32:12. Aluminum frame, tubeless Crossmax, Gore-Tex brake cables, steel 12t King cog. I built this bike from the frame up, and ordered all the parts off the internet, except Isis bottom bracket and Truvativ Stylo SS crank which Sparkster "faced" and installed for me at Pappa Wheelies. I will now try to pre-answer some of MMc's questions.
1. Bianchi is Italian.
2. Before I ride offroad, I switch out the rear cog to a 18tooth.
3. Tubeless tires are light and low psi equals good traction.
4. The fender prevents mud and water from soaking my ass.
5. Bike is 20 pounds.
6. Gore-Tex cables are sealed from the elements, and have a very smooth feel.
7. His name is Seamus and he's a 2 year old Boston Terrier.
8. I bought him from a NH turkey farmer.
9. Those little brown things on the floor are leaves, not crap.

I collect old school BMX bikes and bought them off another collector, he would have died if he knew they were going on a mountain bike and not a real PK Ripper... If you do a search on eBay, there are tons of guys now selling reproduction decals for SE's, Hutch's, DG's and Mongooses. Stay away from NOS (New Old Stock) decals, they can cost a small fortune ($50.00 for an original complete PK Ripper decal set). You can also check out www.bmxmuseum.com , he sells lots of reproduction decals.

J.T. your wife has got one killer Attitude!

Gung,
I enjoy saying that with no negative repercussions! The hardest thing about the conversion of that bike was that the original Mission Control bars were bent and I had to find a new pair! Klein made thos suckers with a 1.25" OD stem, so the 1-1/4 adaptes don't work. I had to get a mission control. It took several months, but I found one in New Milford, CT and snatched it up. The rest was easy. I think I will have a rear wheel built for it with a Surley 1+1 and Mavic 317 rim. I am not too keen on the fact that she has horizontal dropouts and has a skewer.

EVIL,
The only thing keeping me from going under the knife is that I have way too many projects to get off my desk at work. Being that I am in the publishing market you design, send to client, wait for corrections, they send corrections, you make corrections, send back to client, wait for corrections, they send corrections, now they want everything the way you first sent it, next week they will want something different. There is definatley alot of wasted time in the process, you do a half week of real actual work every two weeks.
But, I plan on the surgery happening by mid February and I should be back on my bike in a couple of months.

Hi, I just converted this one over last night, it is my second SS. This one is set up as a 32X16. My other SS is a 32X18. This was built with mostly salvaged parts other than the wheelset, saddle and the Surly fork. It was a 1X8 for a while but after building my first SS in September (and loving it) I figured I'd go all the way. Hopefully the pic isn't too large, I'm still trying to figure out a good size to post photos. Let me know what you think.

Here's a photo of my bridgestone SS. This was my first mountain bike ever, way back in High School, growing up in CA. I was going to let her go (some rust where the paint had rubbed off), but i decided to strip her, paint her, fix the rust, and build a SS. The fork in the photo has been painted to match the frame...havent put it back on yet...not sure what stickers I want on it yet...thinking some flames might be nice...anyways...here she is...

Hey lee, nice ss. A while back i had a ss that used an old derailer for a chain tensioner and I noticed that it often would slap the underside of the chainstay. Noise on a ss is like a thong on a 350 lb guy at the beach.... it's just not right. my suggestion is to wrap some old bar tape or other sound deadening material on the spot where the derailer may hit the chainstay.

You can also run the chain super tight as it won't hurt anything. That helps reduce slap and the chance of it falling off.

We need to get a big old SS ride going in the near future. I haven't been on mine in a dog's age it seems. Maybe I'll take it out tonight.

Chain Tensioners? Freewheels? All that stuff is for sissies! Get a REAL singlespeed ;D

My newest love, an '87 Schwinn World Sport, fixed gear conversion. 48X16, for "thunder thighs." Frame rescued from e-bay ($14 to buy, $35 to ship from Oklahoma) , blasted and painted by Nathan at IF (beer; the gold standard of barter economics).

Built up since around Thanksgiving, I've put 600 or so miles on it, and it makes all other bikes feel boring. It's a real adjustment to get back on a geared bike after a few days on the fixie.

Any other fixed gear fans in Nembaland? Rumor is pk has one in the works...

Is that really a FIXED gear? Meaning it does not freewheel. Meaning you HAVE to pedal all the time? Because it looks like a King hub in back (nice I have one) and that definately freewheels. So, it would be a Single Speed and not a fixed gear. All fixed gears are Single Speeds but, not all Single Speeds are fixed gear. ;)

Actually yea, it's fixed. A few months ago, another guy and I had Boone ( http://www.booneti.com/cr/cr.html ) make up some fixed cogs..only a little special. Instead of threading on, they bolt onto the hub where the rotor would go using the torx bolts that come with rotors. Looks like this:

Now for another dumb question. You ride it like that in the woods? That has to be brutal on pedals when you can't pick which leg is up and which is down when the baby-heads pop up. If so you have my deepest admiration. And, I thought riding a fully rigid SS was brutal enough. ;)

No failures yet between the two of us that have them. Only problem I had was sheering off pins in 9 speed chains, ha.

The hub definitely isn't made for it, but seems to work perfectly. With the CK's, the adaptor to bolt the rotor on is also bolted to the hub. I figure as long as I check those bolts occaisionally to make sure they aren't backing out, all should be good.

You ride it like that in the woods? That has to be brutal on pedals when you can't pick which leg is up and which is down when the baby-heads pop up.

Ha, I only ride it in the woods. Actually, once you start riding fixie out there you pick it up real quick. You just gotta learn to lift the rear wheel and ratchet your cranks to where they need to be, either that or just clear stuff to begin with. It's a little more freaky doing downhills as your spinning like a mad man, but you get used to hanging off the back AND pedaling, sort of a weird combination. I'm still working on big logs or giant pile ups where there are a lot of logs leading up to a big log. I've found that sometimes it's just easier to start going up them and then bunnyhop over them. You should try it sometime! I'm running 180 cranks and rarely ever hit them.

You ride it like that in the woods? That has to be brutal on pedals when you can't pick which leg is up and which is down when the baby-heads pop up.

I'm running 180 cranks and rarely ever hit them.

WOW! 180 cranks too!!

Riding that has got to be an acquired art. I'm afraid to ask what gear you are running because you are probably going to tell me it's a 34x16 or 36x18. Please bring me back to earth gently and tell me it's a human gear you are running.

Ha, no Eric Roman gearing here. I usually run 34x17 (what I'm currently running) or 34x18. I'm in the DC area so there aren't too many extended uphills (like miles) unless you go up into MD or farther south into the GWNF. It's more...umm..rolling.

Well, my old Klein has been collecting dust for a couple of years now. So I finally decided to perform a poor man's single speed conversion on it.

Removed the usual suspects, installed some new handle bars (prior bars were sub 20" flat bars), installed a cheap chain tensioner ($16 ebay), shortened up the chain, and removed all but 1 cog from the freewheel, replacing the others with spacers made out of plastic pipe. ArmOnFire gave me that last idea via his recent post.

Went out for my first real SS ride yesterday. I was surprised that I didn't miss the gears as much as I thought I would. I did miss the lack of suspension. I'll have to run my tires with less pressure.

I did drop my chain a couple of times. Appears to be coming off the chain ring. Any ideas on why this may happen? Chain line looks good and tension seems ok.

......I did drop my chain a couple of times. Appears to be coming off the chain ring. Any ideas on why this may happen? Chain line looks good and tension seems ok.

It's probably protesting having the big ring still installed. :D

I ended up getting a Spicer half-link at http://www.spicercycles.com/index.cgi?cat=18&sub_cat=half%20link%20chain%20lin k&prod_id=389&cat_desc=Mountain . This enabled me to change the tensioner to a push up mode. Don't know how much it helps, but it's a cleaner line.

Nice rig Kirk. You too Glenn.

Half links are definitely good for getting your magic gear combo. If your dropping the chain off the front it could be because your chainring is made to shift super easy. It's probably ramped and pinned. Might look into getting a non ramped chainring, like a Salsa or Surly, and put it on with some shorter bmx chainring bolts. That should help the chain stay on and look cleaner.

Like the previous poster said, shortening the chain and putting the tensioner in push-up is better, gives you more chain wrap around the rear cog.

That Klein is sweet. Try going with a push up style tensioner - or an old derailleur. The Salsa rings are nice, I just put them on two of my SS bikes. BTW - nashbar has really cheap bashguards ($20 I think) and they look exactly like the Truvativ guards. If you want I have a 5 bolt Blackspire collecting dust (94 BCD), it's heavy as a rock but PM me if you're interested. I'll let it go for $10.

November 26th, 2004, 12:02 AM
Thanks for the info guys. I may get a half link and try converting the tensioner to push up mode.

Thanks for offer bdee. For now, I'll stick with the big chain ring. It does not have any ramps or pins for shifting, so I don't think it is causing the problem. I grounded down the teeth for a cleaner look & a little extra clearance.

Thanks Dan, we gotta get out soon & do some SS stuff. I had it out yesterday and felt like I was steping back in time. Roots & rocks that I ussually fly over and miss with full squish were interesting again. But I couldn't get over how smooth it was for a rigid. The super long steel chain&seat stays, steel handlebar & steel seatpost make it feel like it's got an inch of squish.

Bld 19 had these selling for $50 last year. I bought it to pull my daughter around on the rail trail. But then I added some $20 cranks, a BMX bb converter, old tires, seat & a 1" stem. Now it's a bike that I can actually take out on the trails.

As a bonus the cheapo stock rear hub clacks like a Hadley. Too funny....

It's the SOMA 4 one 5 with 631 tubing. It has a pre-built wheelset with WTB Dual Duty and Surly disk hubs. Avid Juicy 5's, Spot chainring (32) and guard, Race Face Turbines, WI 17t freewheel, WTB, Rob Adair model tires. Syncros seatpost, Easton stem and carbon bar with Yeti Grips of course, Selle Italia ass table, an FSA Platinum Pro BB and a Cane Creek SOLOS headset. The fork is the Bomber MX Comp, and the standard Surly bottle opener to keep things tensioned.

The 4 one 5 is not the lightest frame in the world but the 350.00 price tag is not the heaviest either. This is my first steel ride since I was a kid and I am really looking forward to it.
