My rear Hayes disk is squealing like a pig even after I acetone the rotors. Any thoughts on how to de-glaze the pads.... or should I just buy new ones?

Only supposed to use isoprophyl alcohol and buff them slightly (fine grit sandpaper). If it's a pulsing type of squeal it could be a minor rotor warp or even the caliper springs scratching against the back of the pads.

Take the pads off and put them in boiling water for about 15 minutes. The pads do get dirty and oily and this is the best way to clean them. If they still squeel, then take very fine sandpaper (600) and lightly buff them.

Phil Baby,
How are ya? Awesome Forum.
Here's a trick I picked up on the net. It's more for contaminated pads but that may actually be your problem and the glazing just a symptom.
Take the ole pads out and slip them into the dishwasher's silver ware basket and cycle them through with a regular load.
While that's happening make sure you wash up the rotors (leave em on the wheel) and caliper areas with a solution of warm water and Dawn dishwashing liquid.
Works VERY well at elliminating contaminates and silencing the "scream from hell"

Yeah, I think you're right Steve. The pig-squealing started after I mistakenly clean the rotors with one of those citrus degreasers. Bad idea and I should have stuck to acetone stuff.

I'll give washing a shot.. then boiling... then buying new pads! :D

Steve actually has a lot of first hand experience when it comes to "squealing like a pig". Psychologically, he has never recovered after the bum rush attack by a group rednecks. Squeal piggy, piggy! Weeeee, Weeee!. :o :o :o

If you're running short on time, try scotch briting the rotors. A local frame builder that finishes their frames with scotch brite suggests this on their web site. It actually works. :o

Thanks for the tips, my XT discs are pretty noisy too.
Good idea on the scotchbrite, I was thinking about trying that. PK let us know how the washing treatment works.

(I thought discs were supposed to be *quieter* than V brakes?!)

I've read (but not tried) that a quick burn with a propane torch works really well for burning off contaminants.

Try it and let us know!

So, PK, tell us what worked!

The alleged art of decontaminating disk brake pads has been discussed just about to death in http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/showthread.php?s=9b143d9248d777fb28e92579d48ebe47& threadid=15049.
