I know it sounds like a crazy idea but I simply could not afford to buy some $130. colored piece of plastic. I needed to find a cheaper way so my girlfriend came up with this suggestion.
She has been working on it for a few weeks, I put a picture and detailed explanation on my blog: http://recessionbiker.blogspot.com/

Cool write up but I wouldn't use regular spray paint on a helmet. The chemicals weaken the plastic. I think 3m makes a plastic paint but I'm not positive.

I think she is going to use a lighter craft paint specifically for plastics.

My concern wouldn't be as much the plastic as the foam which provides the de-energizing benefits of a helmet in a crash. Foam generally doesn't respond well to anything with a solvent or petroleum based propellant. Not sure if craft paints fall into this category or not.
Cool idea either way, good luck this year.

My girlfriend finished decorating the helmet she had been working on and it came out great. There were issues with what type of paint and gloss to use and she had to take care to cover the foam so that it didn't get damaged.
