View Full Version : Good tubeless rim for NE trails?

Looking for some thoughts from the experienced...

I am looking to upgrade to tubeless while I make my dean ht disc break compatible. Currently have King hubs on a heavy (Mavic D521?) yet durable rim set. Will build new wheels around Kings.

What are some good tubeless disc specific rims that I could build for aggressive xc riding in our locale ?

Looking for the magic blend of durable and reasonably light weight to carry me into the dreamy world of disc and tubeless.

Stan's Flow should be on the short list. Other Stan's options if you want lighter or narrower. Bontrager Mustang maybe?

I've had great luck with Stan's NoTubes "Arch" rims on my 29'r hard tail. I ride pretty aggressive trails and I'm 235 lbs. had them 3 yrs and counting. great rim, builds up easy and true. lube the spoke holes cuz there are no eyelets but that's OK. I've probably built 20 or so wheels over the years and these are some of the best rims that I've used. not cheap but worth it.

use the 25mm yellow tape and Stan's valve stem. replace the stem once a year or so and the tape if it gets fouled up at all. watch the videos on the web site and follow the directions to the tee and you'll be happy.

I've used a number of tires, best bet is anything with a "tubeless ready" bead. lots of them out there these days. had one burp with a standard tire but that's it for problems.

good luck, kmd

Bontrager Duster 32H rims. Lighter and wider than a Mavic 819 and can be set up completely tubless with the Bonty rim strip. With the rim strip in place these are also UST spec so to "me" anyway it's a win win.

Go talk to Dave at Rockland Cycle for some great insight. Super nice guy!

thanks for the ideas.
from reading reviews of Stans, thinking its between Olympic- light, xc specific, and the Arch- all mountain, xc. Flow is a bit too burly.

Likely leaning toward Arch as it will be my first build, and the beefier rim may be more forgiving to imperfection.

I use the Mavic XC 717 rims with their rim strip and they work fine tubeless.

I picked up the dusters with the rim strips in June and they have worked well with 2 different tires. No issues once the stans sealant finished on the beads.
+1 on Rockland Cycle, too

819 fan here. Mounted a Schwalbe Fat Albert on one and it never lost its bead in 2 years with no sealant - it kept air at least as well as the tubed tire/wheel on the front of the bike. A little bit more of a pain to build, but well worth it in my book. Here's a write up I did on my last 819 build... Clickety (http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=593299)

819s all the way for me. I just like the idea that the rim is truly sealed (i.e. no rim strip). The tires I have on now are seeing little use (more skiing than riding right now) but I give them a little squeeze every so often and they still have the same pressure, at least by the thumb check, as they did the last time I rode.

I have a set of mavic crossmax enduro wheels which use a ust rim, I think the 819. It's definitely bombproof. Even when run down completely flat, the bead would stay in place on the rim. That only happened when I completely deflated them on purpose. They're heavy though, which is why I switched to XC717 rims with a rim strip.
