I would like to rebuild an old XT M760 crankset for a SS project and I'm trying to figure out how to size a bash guard for it. I would like to run a 32T 104BCD ring in middle position and a 32T 104BCD guard in the outer position. My question revolves around bash guard, would I be sizing it properly? I want to maximize my crank clearance as much as possible without banging the chain/ring into obstacles.

Thanks,
Anthony

You should get a bash guard just slightly bigger than the chainring you're using. for a 32T ring, I'd say a 34 or 36T guard would be best. it'll only add a few millimeters to the total size, but it'll protect your chain as well as your rings. See, a guard the same size as the ring wouldn't cover the chain, since it would ride slightly taller than the teeth itself.

Hope this helps!

And for what it's worth, I've always liked Salsa & Blackspire guards the best.

I have a 36T guard on a 32T ring and I wish the LBS had the 34T in stock - its just that much too big.

Sweet - okay, yes that makes sense. So if I purchase a 32T ring and I get a 34T guard the difference will be minimal. Thats exactly what the information I was looking for.

Thanks -

Sorry I couldnt help you on the sizing, but I recommend all who ask of bash guards to go with E13's stuff I myself have the E13 Supercharger and love it...Never had any problems with it. Tough as nails and is just a plain old good deal. If you find any other good bash guards though let me know I love to hear about what else is out there for products and how they perform.

I rock an E13 bashguard on 2009 XT cranks. I was between the Saint an the E13. The E13 was in-stock at my LBS. No issues at all. I do run thin washers on the inside to help with chain clearance. It was a B..... to get wedged leaves out of the tiny space in between the BG and chain.

I have used dozens of chain guards. Yes there are dozens. The most clearance with the most strength is the Black Spire Ring God 32th. It is just above the chain when a Sram/Shimano chain is on there. With the chainring on the mid position and the guard on the outer position there is no need for spacers. It is a bit hefty but damn it will last you a long long time. No worries of hitting the chain...super strong.
