Anyone know how long I can expect it to hurt when I take a breath???
It's been 2 weeks already...

Ouch! Sorry, buddy! I checked with a friend who's a nurse who said pain is commonplace anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the patient and how bad the break was.

I've broken ribs twice. It takes 6 to 8 weeks to become pain free. Don't sneeze.

1) Don't laugh.
2) Don't sneeze.
3) Don't lay down, or if you do, don't get up.
Serious pain subsides in a few weeks, pain is pretty much completely gone in 6 weeks.
I have only broke ribs once, I rode the next weekend and it was painful to clear logs, but still doable. I was extremely careful though, falling on a cracked rib would probably not be a good thing.

Three years ago (or so). Cranking in the big ring DOWN a slight hill with Slider. It's a smooth, buff trail - no rocks, hardly even a turn in it. I am standing and hammering. Chain breaks - and I go over the front of the bike and I catch the end of the handlebar right in my sternum - I'd love to see video of that crash, 'cause I can't quite figure out how it happened exactly. I never went to the doctor, but based on the 6-8 weeks of pain I broke a rib or two. I had a nice handlebar end shaped bruise on my sternum for a week or so.

Thanks for the reminder Splat... I sneezed Wednesday night!!!! It was one of those that came on too fast to stop, at the peak of the inhale I had a moment of internal dialog...
I said "What are you doing???" in my head... Then followed by the sneeze that brought me to my knees, followed by the fetal position in the hallway of my house... my amused wife said I should try not to sneeze....
Slappy, I earned this in a MMA class 2 saturdays ago, I was feeling good, got in the ring for a few rounds, and took a knee deep in the lower left ribs... removed all air from my body for me. I thought it was a bruise as it felt OK a few days later so I went to my Submission Wrestling class where after 40 min I felt and hear something "POP" after catching my breath (again) I knew I was done, Dr. confirmed break next day....
Thanks for all the advice everyone... it's appreciated.
I'm sure I'll be riding this weekend....

I'd say by week 4 you should be fairly pain free but be careful. I broke 3 and badly bruised my lung last year which earned me a two night, most expenses paid trip to the hospital. I stayed real quiet for a week but had to go back to work after that. I'm a mechanic and move around a lot, climb ladders, bend at the waist, etc. I was fine for 5 weeks at work with pain killers but when the scrip ran out, I realized I'd been doing too much at work and had to slow way back down to let them heal better. After 8 weeks I was pretty much back to normal, though.

6-8 weeks depending on how separated it is, and the amount of inflammation there is in the area.
I have one( of six that broke with a couple in multiple places) that still hinges mid-rib- it never knitted back together.
