Hi, my name is Eric, I ride in CT. I mostly ride rocky, root covered terrain with downed trees/other man made obstacles.
I've been riding my current wheelset/tires for about 1.5 months now. The tread on my tires (26'') is failing completely and I've ridden the tires into the ground. I'm not disappointed because I got my current bike knowing that it's only a starter rig (Scott Aspect 55) and that eventually, as I improve, I will need a new bike. I want to get a wheelset and new tires that I can move to my next bike.
As I mentioned before I like rocky, root covered terrain, muddy at times (when it rains), and I love to go fast. I'm going to be getting into racing in the upcoming weeks so the wheels/wheelset should be geared toward offering me maximum speed, while of course offering me stability in the conditions I described.
I read the wheel thread below me, but not sure what information I should be taking out of the thread.

I have a set of the XT-775 wheels (factory wheel set), they are light (1580 grams i think?) and offer quick engagement while being very quiet.
Depending on your budget you should look into stans rims and custom wheels, notubes.com or look into BWW http://www.bicyclewheelwarehouse.com
You could build a very light set of race wheels (1300 grams) for alot cheaper than a set of crossmax.
As for tires, I use the maxxis minion DH-F 2.35 on the front and rear- works amazing for roots, rocks, slippery conditions. It has the super tacky rubber and the most grip, seals up well for tubeless, but is rather heavy.
For race tires I use race kings, 2.2 supersonics, running tubeless with stans.
Good luck!

+1 on the link above, I got a solid set of wheels from them for a great price.

I've been riding the XT / 717 disc wheels from Colorado Cyclist for about four years or so and have had good luck with them; I typically run velociraptors for tires.

Dt Swiss 4.2D rims w/240 hubs. My favorite combo to date. Not cheap however. Stans has some more reasonably priced wheels available if you go with their new ZTR hub.

I'd get Mavic Crossmax's they aren't the cheapest but are on sale right now at pricepoint or Jensonusa.com for like $450 so it's a good deal. Customs are good too, just don' go to light cause you'll be braking/warping them left and right here.
as for tires.. I have tried many diff one and always seem to come back to kenda nevegals. not the best tire for any one thing but does everything well. great tire to slap on and forget about. Maxxis Ignitors are a bit lighter and faster rolling but they are wimpy sidewalls and I've blown 2 because of it. got Mtn Kings right now which are SUPER grippy in the leaves and on roots but are down right wobbly on rock face.
where in CT are ya?
