This year's annual Fall Epic will be on Sunday, October 19th.

From Pennwood State Park (Avon, CT) to Robinson State Park (Agawam, MA). About 38 miles of pretty technical. One of the best routes (this long) that can be had around here.
We meet at my house, load the bikes in the trailer and get shuttled to Pennwood. One water stop at the mid-point. Pizza back in Agawam.

Bring a blanket for your bike (in the trailer) and all the food you need for the day on the trails. It will probably be about 7 hours. We will have a feed at my house after. Please bring something to share. I will have pizza and drinks.

Be at my house between 7:00 and 7:15. We will hopefully be loaded and pulling out by 7:30...

How it works: Show up at my house – Grab everything you need for the day and get in the shuttle vehicle – Get driven to the start – Say good bye to the shuttle drivers – Hit the trail and ride for a while. You should be pretty tired by the time we get back. ;) Food will be waiting. So… your vehicle will stay at my house for the day, and will be waiting for you at the end of the ride. Also, your blanket, which protects your bike in the trailer on the shuttle down, will also be waiting for you at my house when you are done.

Hype and Lore:
This ride’s heritage dates back to the late 80’s. It was either 88 or 89, after a long season of great group riding, that include plenty of the obligatory waiting and regrouping. Everyone had been riding all season, fitness levels were elevated, and we wanted an all out ride! A group ride with no waiting. What!?!? That’s right… No waiting at corners, no regrouping. The idea was born! “The Death Loop”! Pretty much hang-on as long as you can, and then… well…your on your own. The location was Granville MA. Back then, most had an idea of which way was out, because the riding community was smaller and we most all rode together, and therefore knew the areas we rode. The Death loop was about an all day ride at a good pace, and a monster feed after. One long time rider (but out of the loop now) would always bring a huge waist pack full of baked goods to share on the trail. Injuries were pretty much guaranteed.
The tradition continued for the next 8 or so years… People moved, interests changed, and the group became smaller. :(
The ride was moved to Palmer for one or two year’s, with a much kinder-gentler tone. It was foreign turf to most, so waiting and regrouping was brought into the ride.
Then in 98 or 99, I ended up taking the ride organization over. The ride went half way back to it’s roots by starting back in Granville and the quicker pace was reinforced a bit. :burndev:
Since then, it has been a one-way shuttle-ride. The first couple years we rode from Granville, back to my house. That route was know as the “back-yard tour” because the 3 or 4 miles of trail that connected the hills to the urban park I live-on, are kind-of through peoples back yards and such. Urban sprawl has pretty much killed the connection now.
Then, in 2000 or 2001, the route changed to the current path we will use this year. This route from Pennwood to my house is quite stellar and challenging, but some of the regulars are looking for a change. So, the options are open for next year.
As for now, it will go off as usual. There are no shortcut bailouts for this ride. I will have asphalt route sheets to hand out as needed, but the start is a 25 mile road ride from my house (and your car).

Come ride this legendary route for it's final installment!

Next year we will likely go full circle and head back into the hills and burly trails of Granville, and resurrect the Annual Tradition “The Death Loop”. :rad:

Let me know if you are in.

I like the now historically factual reference to a 'three part epic ride series' that appears in the thread from last year...talk about clairvoyant!

The 19th-now that'll work for me! I think we'll have Mr. Green and possibly Young master Green. My boyz Eric and Luke might man up for this-but we'll see, they ducked the hometown Wendell Epic...

Thank Goodness I just got to ride this one-as it'll take all my focus I'm sure!

Looking forward to it, Steve (I've never ridden any of this before).

The long-range forecast is looking good! It's time to make your intentions known! Please confirm that you are in (even if you let me know already). And let me know, if you know, of anyone else planning on it, that might not have gotten to me. I keep hearing about folks from other folks, and the numbers are growing!
The longer of the two road sections (that was about a mile) has been replaced with a nice trail, a good climb, and a few steps off the bike. Less is more. Less road, more trail!
Hope to see you Sunday!!!!! Steve

BTW - I could use a couple more shuttle drivers.
Duties include waking up way too early, driving (or just riding along in the vehicle) to the start point, driving a vehicle back to my house. So.... you would need to be at my house around 7:15, and then you would get back by 9ish. You would still have the whole day in front of you, get our endless gratitiude AND could come back for the post ride feast!

The conclusion ride of the PV-Triple Epic was a crowning achievement! That ran as smooth as silk-with a really great, large crew of riders (yep, like the other two Epic rides, the turn out was surprisingly strong!). WE had Beautiful weather, fantastic trails, and superlative Ride Leader (and his great Family!).

I love the balance of the ride-25 miles of rocky ridge grunting, followed by 12 miles of restorative high speed twisty ripping!

That was everything a group epic ride ought to be. Thanks, Steve-you earned your T-shirt!

Every strong rider ought to put this on their calendar for next year!

This was, by far, the biggest group this ride has ever seen. We were also blessed with the best weather in the history, which equalled, the best completion percentage ever. This may be a world record, for a ride this strenuous. We started the day with 27 hardy, highly capable riders. Some were first-timers to the fall epic, and there was some nervousness in the crowd. But the ride begins, and that all fades real fast. It was right around 40 degrees for the first couple miles with bright sun. Temps warmed up a little quickly, and then pretty much stayed there all day. Rocks are the order of the day, and along with the biggest and bests previously mentioned, we had an estimated 14 flats on the day! Luckily everyone was able to get themselves going again and the lead and sweep riders had radios, so we were able to keep the crew moving (for the most part) while broken tubes were being mended. A derailer was lunched after only an hour and a half or so, but that bike was converted to a SS and finished the ride that way. A normally non-SS rider, he was quoted after the ride "That was enough SS for me for this lifetime", but we never waited for him once, nor heard a complaint. (This ride is definitely not the place for giving SSing a try for the first time.) One rider had other committments and spotted a vehicle for the 12:30 mark. Worked out perfect, as that is where our first and only injury came in. So we dropped two riders at the water stop. Everyone fueled up, fluided up and hit the trail again. From there on out, it was pretty much smooth sailing, besides the unrelenting flats. The back was stretching out a bit more at the regroups, but that is to be expected, after many hours on the trail. At about the 25 mile mark, we came off the ridge and hit the polar-opposite, that is Robinson SP. Most everyone seemed to get a bit rejuvenated with the high speed toolin of the next 10+ miles. A wonderful bonfire and feed followed, that was solely orchestrated by my amazing wife. All details were considered for us, and we didn't have to think, just eat! A raffle of shwag provided by New England Bicycle and the NERAC club was a big hit. Most went home with some goods. But EVERYONE went home with a good night's sleep. Until next year!!!

Special Notes:
- A HUGE Thanks to our shuttle drivers (especially Ken, who came out with no ties to the ride) :rad:
- Another HUGE Thanks to my lovely wife for making the day possible, both shuttling for us, and the afore mentioned after party!!! :rad:
- We had one female in the group and she rocked!!! :rad:
- Up for grabs, for completing all three of these Epics was a commerative T-shirt. The folks who earned them are as follows: Liam Obrien, Steve Rossi, and (for 2.5 rides) Chris Jenkins :rad:
- And a special thank you to our T-shirt Artist, my son Michael!!! :rad:

One last pic... As previously stated, my son did the art work. Came out pretty cool... This, for the finishers of all three rides.
