Well - after seeing the Vermont's best kept secret ad on Page 19 of this months Singletracks magazine, I went on the Ascutney Trails web site (http://www.stabvt.org/) and signed up as a paying member so I could access their online trail descriptions and I must say, I'm pretty disappointed.
What you get when you sign up is a list of something like 38 trails with text descriptions of where the trails are, NO MAP. Some of the text descriptions are fine because I'm pretty familiar with the area, but I think if you're not and you don't know where Jim Lyall's driveway is off Rt 44, then you'll have a hell of a time finding these trails.
To plan out a day or two up there, I'm going to have to read all the descriptions and try to hand plot the trails on a map myself and then see where they all are and plan out a route - i.e. this trail to this road to this trail to this road, etc...
Then - since there's no signs on these trails (I believe), I'm going to have to carry the 10 pages of directions I printed out with me.
But anyway - why I'm writing is to partially inform you that that's what you get when you pay to access their site, but also to ask - has anyone gone up there and GPS'd any of the trails? Could you send me the GPX file? or whatever you have? It could make my life a bit easier.
Thanks,
Brad
