I've got the day off this Friday and thinking of going to Wompatuck. Never been there, will have my gps with me so I won't be getting lost. What are the current conditions like? Any suggestions on where to ride? I'll either have my SS or my hardtail, probably my SS. Thanks.

If you're going in at the main entrance in Hingham, I would suggest picking up a trail map from the visitor's center and heading out to Prospect Hill.
The trails are in great condition for the most part, I just rode there today. Have fun.

How far/long are you looking to ride? Really you could use either SS or a geared bike in there, only spot the SS might suck is a really boney climb up prospect. Let me know how long and I can make route suggestions based on the map.

Everytime I go to wompatuck I have can't get into the flow cuz I always come to an intersection and have to pull out the map. It would be suhweet if someone could highlight their favorite loop (the more tech the better) on the map and post it.
I'm starting to lose faith in the place but i know that a good ride can be had.
Any takers? :)

Ask and you shall receive (okay, actually just a slow day at work). Hopefully this will blow up for you, should be able to print 11x17 if you want.
I ride variations of this loop clockwise from the VC pretty often. Dunno how far you're looking to ride, but this is somewhere around 12-15mi I guess. Some of the boney/techier sections are marked, but really I ride there so much I forget.
-I would also suggest leaving time to hit the area labeled playground; fun little trails, can't really get lost, small area. If you have to cut out some of the highlighted route do it, do it.
-Easy ways to cut down this route are cutting out the area in the NE corner/"nature study area" and riding down Doane St. to R1, and again in the SW corner/"south field" near the wildlife management area. Just grind pavement if you have too.
-Trail S32-S11 is one of my favorite pieces of single track in the park.
-S1-S4 is a great boney climb (for coastal standards), nice way to chanllenge yourself. As you can see there are tons of lines up Prospect hill, so if you like a challenge climb the hill a couple times. Builds character right?
Maybe a bit too much intell, but I feel okay doing this. Wompy isn't much of a secret, but please look out for wet areas that still exist and either ride through the middle or walk around. Hit me up if you want a guide sometime if you can deal with a fat guy at intermediate pace and no skills.
*Edit* sorry image looks all screwy, I don't have access to any workable image software at work. Looks a bit screwy, but grab a real map at the park as a backup plan. Obviously you miss a bunch of stuff on this loop which is good as well, just harder to link into a loop without doubling back, pavement grinds, etc.

You might find the Landmine race couse map put together by I think EFTA and/or BikeBarn to be helpful, it there is a VERY detailed course description. I'll post it if I can find it.

Wompatuck Campground opens supposedly this weekend. No more closed gate just after the visitor center. No more 3:30pm closing time.
Can the mosquitoes be far behind, or is it the black flies.
All entry points to the park have informational kiosks that have a supply of park maps in the attached boxes. Each kiosk also has a map showing that YOU ARE HERE, so you know where you are (physically) at.

Thanks. That would be me. I've been maintaining them for the last couple of years and have had marginal success in keeping "kids" from f'ing with perfectly good jumps. The so-called improvements are usually thrown together, poorly constructed and consist mainly of duff.
Today, I noticed the kicker at the bottom of the trail (after the stepdown) is back. However, it's poorly built at best. Here's a shot of it in its former glory before someone tore it apart and threw up a piece of plywood. It will return.

lol i hit that kicker today and it was soft to say the least, also too close to the roller, step it back about 3 feet, build it the right way, and you got one fun stunt,
if you have any more days planed to spruce up the playground just tell me i'll be more than willing to lend a hand, i just have no experiance building stuff like that, but any one can use dumb labor right ? lol

I went today and had an ok ride. I feel the same way...intersection, pull out map, look at map go....intersection, pull out map, look at map, go. All in all I had fun and that's what it is all about. No work, 48th birthday, riding on the trails, what could be better? Oh I know turning 28.....

when i first started riding there i just put the map in my pocket and kept riding untill i was lost, tired, or it was getting dark, only relied on the map to get me out of the park when i was ready to go, or if i wanted to check out a sertant part of the park, maps are the last option i resort to, if a trail flows then keep on riding, come up to a fork in the path just pick left right or straight before the trail picks it for you,
