Is there a botanist in the house ? It was growing off to the side of the trail in Great Brook.

That would be skunk cabbage - very common wetland plant - I'm sure you would recognize it when the leaves get bigger and more noticeable.

It's pretty common then... I had no idea they flowered like that.

The center part of the flower smells rotten and the flies then pollenate the plant. It blooms too early for the butterflies to do the job. It is one of the first spring plants to bloom, sometimes coming up through the snow. It grows in the swampy areas.

My Mom always said that skunk cabbages are the first sign of spring ;-)
